Hi Guys,

I'm going to the Norfolk Gala day this afternoon, good mixture of things to do and see, motorcycle displays, classic cars, and lots of people.

My question is, what lens do I take with me, lenses below

18-55 kit lens
10-20mm
70-300 vr

Can't take them all because I don't have a bag, and don't want to be lugging all three around, so what would you guys recommend I do?

Also, what's the law briefly on (should I wish to) taking photos of people, like candid shots??

Thanks

Neill

70-300 would be my choice as greater options available.
I wouldn't have a problem with photographing people at a public event but I would always ask myself if I would be offended if someone took 'that' shot of me - I would also think about how I intended to use the shot to see if that made any difference.
If important and in doubt ask permission to use it, afterwards.

Thanks for the reply gramps, My people shots would really be just to practice taking pics of people, to see if I can capture a mood, expression etc. Certainly wouldn't be for commercial or any other use.

My thinking was the 70-300, so that's 2 votes for that one then!!!!

Hi Neil, I'd be tempted to go with the 70-300mm, that will give you the range if you're at a distance from the subjects, yet 70mm will get you fairly close to the action. If you plan on getting into the crowds up close, then perhaps the 18-55? You should be safe with taking photos, I'm sure you'll see loads of other togs there. Rob

i dont think the 70mm would be wide enough
if you wanted to take pics of the classic cars you'd have to stand so far back people wouldn't know you were shooting & would just wander around in front of you :bang:
but then with the extra reach you could grab some candids without people even knowing you were there ;)

or go UWA & shove it in peoples faces

only you really know which kind of approach you prefer :)

Thanks fabs, I would take the 18-55, but I'm sure people would get suspicious if I were taking pics of them with a rather large bulge in my shorts!!!!!!!!!

So another vote for the 70-300

Tirpitz, I Know where you're coming from, but I'm very keen to do some moving type shots, I don't think i'm going to be taking pics of static displays if I'm honest. So in real terms I think I'm even answering my own question!!!!

Thank you guys, I've made my decision, "Tonight matthew, i am going to take the 70-300"!!!!!!!!!!!!

They'd do that even if you were using the 18mm...

I'd also say the long one and then the 18-55 in your pocket. If you want to get shots of static car/bike displays you do sometimes need to be able to get quite close to them.

Thanks Seth, it's going to be the 70-300

I don't suppose you have relatives up here in Norfolk do you Seth??? Only reason I ask, I know someone who has a son called Seth, which is quite an unusual name

this is my shot at a carshow. I think 70-300mm is useless in this situation, unless you want to shoot hair in someones nose.
if it's a goodwood festival , then yes 70-300mm is the choice.

Well guys, I took the 70-300, and was glad I did, got a nice few candid shots of people, and some moving shots (motorcycle display team) Appreciate your comments everyone. :)

I would take my 10-300 F1.4, only measures 3" in length so wouldn`t be noticed. Seriously take 2 lens to cover the whole spectrum.

Let's see some pics then! Do you feel like it was the right choice?
