Hi, and yes I no I hate these WHAT questions but here goes.
Considering a laptop for PP I have L/R 5 and will also use PSE and OnOne software.
Will need to be able to calibrate with the i1 Display Pro.
If possible a fire-wire connection.
Need to have a large screen, around 17".
Was looking at the Dell
Inspiron 3721 but seems it has no fire-wire connection
Any input welcome.
Thanks
Russ

a second hand 17' mac book pro has fireware and a decent screen (for a laptop but calibrating a laptop screen is somewhat pointless considering the color shifting that occurs on every move)

Thanks for the reply, trouble is I use Windows and my software is for that system.
Thanks again
Russ

There is no problem to run windows as the operating system but it is true that you pay the apple tax for the privilege of owning their hardware (not without reason because they are quality machines).

budget?

par for the course is at least an i5 quad with 8gb, dedicated graphics memory is handy and an SSD as the boot drive (assuming you have external storage) if you can afford it.

also an external IPS screen as laptops arent the best screens (even calibrated).

What's the firewire needed for?

Old outdated technology ;) :D

Have a Canon 1DS MK II and requires a firewire connection to use tethered with Lightroom.

Thanks for the replies

retina MBP (and if fact all the others) has thunderbolt, and there are adapters to FW.

I suppose EyeFi card is not a good enough alternative?

Hi, I was led to believe that if you used the FW adapter via a USB port it would NOT work for the 1Ds as far as changing the camera settings via computer ie change the amount of frames to take for the likes of HDR 3 to 5,7 or 9 frames.
So I assumed that it would not work for tethered capture also.
Have not thought of the Wi-Fi card but thanks for the suggestion will try the them in order on my older laptop.
