No
I have a few friends who went to a music concert last weekend in Cardiff and I told them that they may not be allowed to take their SLRs with them, it’s something that I read on one of the forums. So, they checked this out by calling the organisers and sure enough they were told anything with a removable lens is a :nono::nono:. Well, one of them – my friends – had a Fuji bridge camera and was happily shooting away at the event before one of the organiser’s security came over and told him that anything with such a powerful zoom was also a :nono::nono:.

So, this brings me to my questions … what type of events prohibit cameras? Why do they do so? And what cameras would be permissible in such events?

Basically anything that can produce a 'saleable' shot seems to be a no no. They dont want people making any money from their 'product', understandably I suppose as they will have ploughed a lot into marketing these bands, or whatever and want to rake back that money through image sales themselves.

So, is it safe to conclude that this rule only limited to concerts and performance shows where people are playing / performing?

I would image you will find it all over the show - for instance, some cricket grounds have no problem with you taking a camera, some seem to have the 'small camera' only rule, others seem to have photography totally banned.:shrug:

So, and excuse me for going on with this, but how would I know (other than calling up in advance)?

i went to a diana ross concert last year (present for the missus), i wasn't allowed to use my dSLR wih 18-55 kit lens (was 3rd row from front), but others were allowed compacts with 10x optical zoom on them :D

that is the only way you know, and from what i have heard doesnt guarantee you will get in with it. if the guy on the door says no, you will struggle to get someone different to come revoke the decision.

A few big events that have forums may tell you on them.
I'm off to Download (rock festival) this weekend and when I checked the forum, sure enough no SLRs...

The reading festival have no rules against it...

Next question, on the same issue, if I go to an event and I am asked to "surrender" my camera ... how safe would it be?

I have been asked a couple of times but have always said no and gone home.

I've often been asked to do the same in a few cinema complexes; like you, I've said no and left. I don't patron any place that refuses me to take my camera with me (my camera is an appendage part of me).

Sometimes if you are denied entry to a festival/venue with a SLR/DSLR you will be asked to check it into the cloakroom (or you can just check it in, they don't always tell you they have a cloakroom). Usually these are perfectly safe and it's better than not being allowed in at all.

My cameras protective bag is disguised as (ok made from) an insulated lunchbox so for such as cinemas and download it isn't a problem, maybe if you feel cheeky, you could find a suitable bag to encapsulate and disguise your camera bag?
