Yes
When ever I go out togging I tend to see photo's that in my opinion would look good as HDR pictures.
I have had numerous comments on my pictures, some positive and some not so positive so what are your thoughts on this type of photography?
I don't mean my pictures, just HDR as a whole?

Led Zep...... it's just a band!

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.....no harm in trying on a shot per shot basis!

Sometimes HDR looks amazing, others it looks crap because it's just been done for the sake of it. I think the subject matter has a huge amount to do with it. It's something I'd like to have a go at when a) I know how to do it, b) find something suitable for HDR-ing and c) have the time to do it.

It's a form of cake pete.

I prefer that a photo should represent what was the subject as close as possible. Ok there are times when some editing/alterations make improvements but messing about too much is not to my liking. Its a question of personal taste or if for professional reasons what the client requested.

Spot on. Any technique can destroy an image in the wrong hands.

Its a bit of a wide question that doesn't really have an answer.

You may just as well ask about: "What do people think about x-style post processing"

Some people love B&W, others not. Some people love high key portraits, others not.

Some people love HDR, others not. Some people can tolerate HDR when its subtle, others love it when its well over-done.

What's your favourite flavour of ice cream? What sort of car do your drive?

Its all out there.

ben & jerrys phish food, and a ford focus.

Whoops! lost the plot there and was just answering questions!

The thing with HDR is that its inbetween processing a style and processing like RAW. You can use it carefully and hide the editing or you can go crazy. The same can be said of RAW. If you drag all the sliders up, fill light, recovery, blacks and such then you'll get a mess. HDR isn't technically a style. Tone mapping is what people think of as the "HDR look". Me, well I just call it HDR processing and use it on anything. If it works it works.

I dont mind HDR if its subtle - used to bring out sky details and so on without making it cartoony. A lot of the stuff i see is over saturated and just looks weird.

Then again, im not one to like any arty effects at all on photos. And i think black and white completely ruins a photo which will always look better in colour :)

I'm not really a big fan of HDR, I'd rather view the photo as seen as naturally as possible, as if you are viewing it with your own eyes. If I want to view things all strange-looking, I'd get into LSD or some other mind-bending drugs!
Mind you, having said that, I don't mind monochrome, and I quite like some macro and extreme close ups. And funnily enough, I also like the more experimental stuff (like eleckro's).
It's really like what some people said in here, it entirely depends on the subject matter, I have actually come across some pictures that really did look good with some subtle HDR, same goes for monochrome.
But then again, I have absolutely no clue how to do HDR processing so I'm a fine one to talk! :shake: :D

just google it, there are plenty of programs that will do it for you.

I like it when its used for good effect. I find it a bit boring though when you look at a photographers portfolio and everything in it is hdr

To me there are three types of hdr and only one of them has true merit in claiming to be photographic technique … the others are simply processing effects In comparison.

1. The heavy HDR look ...some love it, some hate it. (I think its cool)
2. The hdr rescue processing ... usually pointless, it either has 'it' or it belongs in the bin...but either way its good practice and fun.

And the true one
3. The capture of data to produce a high dynamic range photograph...which can be done well or badly just like any other exposure.

firstly its not photography, its an imaging processing technique. it produces a digitally created image not a photograph. so long as people don't call them photographs I'm happy. most look **** though

If your going to use that argument then 95% of all the images on this site should be defined as digitally created images as virtually all of them have been messed about in photoshop or similar. Hell even a JPG straight from the camera has been significantly processed by the onboard circuits. Your argument makes little or no sense and I'm not even a big HDR fan!

Tis big saggie pants, only ever seen one HDR pic I have liked but that was more to do with the scenery more than what had been done by the photographer. So a great big blown up thumbs down from me, unless someone can prove it can look stunning without it looking over processed.

Gentlemen please. Lets all agree that we're wrong, and that PsiFox came up with the correct suggestion!

If you have anything to do with motorhome forums you will know that the legalities of A frames or whether gassing really happens are two topics that always create fascinating threads. HDR is obviously one of photographys lol

Ive only started using it after buying PhotoMatixPro3, i tend to use it alot, some work and some dont so i just...dont use it for those shots, its interesting and fun to play around it, i cant think of why people dont like it, it's just like manipulating your photo any other way on any other program.

I thought it was High Dynamic Range?

sometimes it works and other times it doesnt. some can look way OTT to

i didnt used to like it but am starting to like it more and more now

Yeah it is High Dynamic Range, i don't know what he's talking about! :rules:

The entire point of HDR is to capture more detail in high contrast scenes because your camera isn't as good as your eyes. Cameras always get sunsets wrong because they meter for the sun or the bright sky. So the ground comes out as a silhouette. Thats not how you see things.

Most of the HDR ypou see is rubbish but when you get it spot on as with this

http://www.photosig.com/go/photos/view?id=2251797

then it looks amazing

That is stunning.

If you can tell at a glance that it's HDR it's probably been overdone.

Personally, I don't like it but I have been known to do dodging and burning both in PS and the darkroom.
