What is your best band ever?

Pink Floyd has to be mine but lots of other bands for different reasons..
The Who live..
Rolling Stones, Oasis, Snow Patrol,

Tangerine Dream (Phaedra - Livemiles) The whole was greater than the sum of the parts when the nucleus of the group was Franke / Froese
Marillion (Fish era)

Solo artist : Richard Thompson

composition : Music for 18 musicians by Steve Reich.

Cannot believe no-one has mentioned the Beatles yet? They must be the greatest band ever who really did change the face of music. Songs like Tomorrow Never Knows, Helter Skelter and While my Guitar are just amazing!!

No mentions of Led Zep either? For me it is a toss up between the Beatles or Kinks but think Beatles shade it.

Only one? Thats tough, my list would include Led Zepplin, Cream, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Hawkwind, if its only one, then i would go with Deep Purple.

Yes (the original band). Simon and Garfunkel too, but they weren't a band.

uriah heep 1972 - 1975

Forgot all about Uriah Heep, had a couple of their albums Very Eavy, Very Umble and Salisbury, good band and nice covers too

Has to be Guns n Roses. Appetite For Deatruction changed my life!

It's an equal 3 way tie between Pink Floyd, Yello and Faithless. I couldn't pick an absolute top one as it revolves between them.

New Order. The band that for me through the angst teen years.

The Smiths for similar reasons...bought every 12" and every album the day it came out. They are head and shoulders better for me.

I'd also say that Radiohead, Green Day, early REM, Stone Roses are up there too.

Music I can feel
It could be Air for a quiet moment or The Stranglers for a shout out..

its gotta be LED ZEP the greatest band ever:D

there are a few close seconds but.. you asked for the best

Best live band, has to be Iron Maiden, unforgettable experience.

Best recordings, The Beatles.

My best band, They Might Be Giants. Nerdy college rock FTW! :D

Has to be Spinal Tap...

(After all, Jimmy Page didn't write Stairway until he was 27... David St Hubbins coould play it when he was 12... )

Radiohead and the Roses are defo up there. I only really appreciated The Smiths later in life.

Wow.... tough thread.....where to start....

I have so many bands I like listening too....

I could name The Cure, but then they have gone off the boil recently... Sisters of Mercy as they are still playing even if they are not recording.... Dropkick Murphys or maybe Flogging Molly just because they are so much fun...

I think though I probably have to say... Interpol....

You lot have probably only ever heard of The Cure LOL.....

I'm a big fan of The Beatles, Rolling Stones as well but for me personally it comes down to the bands that I can remember being around as I was growing up which was pretty much mid 70s onwards. I know the Stones fit into that category but, for me, their best stuff was in the 60s by a long long way.

Iron Maiden, best song Fear of the Dark

Although I never got the chance to see them, Led Zepelin for me, over the hill and far away from the rest.
I could never pick a second place though

Floyd of the pink type (well it would be wouldn't it ? :D)
Closely followed by ELP
and Mike Oldfield, of course

There's loads I love (Faith No More/Metallica/Megadeth/AC-DC), but the one band I am still listening to 26 years after I first heard them are The Beastie Boys

The first (1986)...

the chilled (2008)...

...and the best (1994)....

Alot of bands on here have made me feel that I may of been a little rash in my choice....but I stand by it for the simple reason that when I'm half cut....sozzled....paraletic I always turn to the pumpkins closely followed by the Beastie Boys. 3mc's and 1 dj being my fav. A brilliant innovated band with some of the best vids I'll ever see. Blinding choice!

cool...A lot of people don't realise they are actually very talented musicians, and some of their instrumentals are just awesome.

I actually remember doing an assignment on them in my 2nd year music class when i was 12 in '84 when everyone was going round pinching VW badges off cars!!!

If I could only pick one it would have to be radiohead.
They do so many different styles and excel at them all.

Some of my favourites, well worth a listen

I genuinely believe that most bands have a 3 album peek ... most of my fave bands do anyway.

Those that have surpassed that include The Beatles, The Doors, Radiohead, The Charlatans (please don't laugh) and of course Led Zeppelin.

When I've talked about current favourite bands in recent years, Mew, Interpol and Elbow have come close to firing me up long enough, but not pushed past a third really good album ......... Elbow live though, lush everytime!

EDIT: And before anyone says it, I don't necesarily mean first 3 albums ;)

Smiths, Joy Division (still can't believe anyone wrote poetry in Macclesfield during the 70's), New Order pre 1991, Cocteau twins, Felt.
I'm currently re discovering Prince, especially his early stuff, Dirty mind/Controversy era.

Best of the current crop is Radiohead, nice they covered my favourite Smiths song and Joy Division song recently, nearly as good as the originals.

(Really liked the first Interpol album, production made them sound like they had been at it for years)

Helter Skelter is a cover! It's my fave Beatles song and then I realised they didn't actually write it!

Well - based on concert appearances... I'd have to go for

:3rd: The Tubes (Knebworth 1978) (maybe a little left-field...)

:2nd: Pink Floyd (Wall Tour - Earls Court 1980)

which leaves us with

:1st: Led Zeppelin (Knebworth 1979)

The thing with mentioning the Beatles is they are the best in terms of influence, and I don't know of any other band that can sound so different from beginning to end in such a short period.

But maybe a bit of an obvious one, I grew up on the Beatles and they are fantastic, probably are the best, but these questions kinda make you want to get away from them, because it is so obvious.

I tried my hardest to take everyone’s first thoughts into account so far. Take myself, I’m now thinking that, Radio Head should have been my choice. This is how it stands at the moment with this thread ‘What is your best band ever,' in no paticular order...................................If I missed anyone one it was because I was unsure of the choice they made or the beer just got to me...............What a singular diverse bunch you lot are and long may it continue. :):):)
