Why do people on Ebay bid up prices to the point of new :cuckoo:

you can buy it NEW for £91.00 online including delivery.

Ebay used to be a good place to pick up something at a reasonable price now mad people bid and buy things for some times more than they can get them for new, I seen so much stuff being sold lately at full price, I think people just get carried away :bonk:

The worst thing eb@y did was introduce that 'second chance' thing where if the winning bidder pulls out the seller offers it to the next loser at their bid, now you get chancers overbidding their own item with a second account.
 
I have been an ebay user since 2008, and I can say there are loads of idiots on ebay (edit: 2003 not 2008)

Ive been an ebay user since 2002 and yes there are far less bargains now than there used to be, but there is also a hell of a lot more people using it now when you are selling stuff.

People get carried away bidding, and when you are a seller, thats great, when you are a buyer, just look elsewhere.
 
I agree that the prices of some items are such that it is sensible to buy them from other places but I have also sourced many items from eBay much cheaper than other sites or shops. On occasions I have bought bargain priced items which I couldn't even find elsewhere.

I guess it is like all purchases; research and go with what represents best requirements for you personally.
 
I bought a 70-200 2.8 of ebay last week but if it had got to within about £300 of retail I would have bought retail. With a warranty. Ebay's supposed to be a cheaper way but its turning more into a convenient way of shopping.
 
Its what I call 'Ebay Fever' people get carried away and it becomes personal

"They are not outbidding me......its mine.... I must have it" <...... something like that

I once had an old ford radio that I was going to bin. My wife said put it on ebay as even if I get a £1 it may be of use to someone and save scrapping it......

It went for £70 :eek:

Its was just an old knackered radio - no CD - No cassette and I was VERY clear about it in my listing

I sold an ancient and completely broken beyond repair sat nav on there a while back. I was expecting maybe £10 but it sold for £90.
Madness.
 
:thinking: Hyped up bids :shrug: try looking at the hyped up postage costs that these people want... £8.95 for 2nd class postage, do these things weigh more than 2.5kg then :shrug:
 
I bought a Fuji s1 pro that was sold as spares for £30 about 5 years ago , the seller had been clever when he put pentaprism damage because the photo showed a crack but the back was completely smashed

It was knackered so I took it apart to see how it worked and was surprised to find the cutouts for film spools in it

I ended up with a sensor that looked ok but I had no idea if it worked and a bag of bits

For a laugh I put it back on eBay with a very accurate and slightly comical description and to my utter astonishment it made £70 and the buyer was very happy with it
 
I once described a novelty tank pad (it's a motorcycle accessory) as the perfect present for someone you don't like very much and it got 10 bids and sold for nearly £10 when it was probably worth under £1. :shrug:
 
Having seen this sort of thing with my own eyes plenty of times, I can only assume it's people not knowing where to get the bargains from online retailers and go by Jessops/PC World high street prices and naturally assuming that eBay will always be cheaper.

That was true a few years a go, but thanks to stupid people, it tends to be over-priced for bidded items. Bad for buyers, but ok for sellers, at least until you take out fee's lol.

That certainly is true, some years back I was bidding for a playstation game for my son when someone sent me a message that I could get it £10 cheaper at Play.com, thankfully someone outbid me :lol:. I rarely use ebay now
 
Know what you mean, I had a clear out in the garage of some old motorbike bits expecting about £200 enough to go towards a Sigma 10-20
I ended up getting enough from the sales to buy the Tokina 11-16 :clap::clap:

Unless people cant be around near the end of bidding, why do people bid at all until about 20 mins from closing? Everyone and i mean everyone, is bumping up the prices!! As people have said here, great for selling, but not good for buying.

I've seen a 12 inch piece of rope sell before for £6. What could it be used for??!! £6!!!!
 
Hate ebay with a passion, it used to be good but now everyones trying to make loads of money out of it.

Plus the price to place items and the percentage they take off your final sale price is extortionate. Ill keep my account for now but not much longer, and dont get me started on paypal ffs.
 
Stay away from flea-bay. Full of con merchants. Never go near there
 
Its all about paying a price that you see fit for the item. If you think £6 is good value for a 6" piece of rope then go for it but I reckon that 99.9% of the public would think your bonkers!

I have bought and sold a few bits on Ebay and have been suprised at how much some items go for and other items that I thought would be good sellers having no real intrest!

Still spend far too much time hunting around for that item that bargain that no one else hes spotted!
 
years ago I was looking for a saxophone on ebay and found a shop based in Brighton. Every week they'd list one for 99p and every week it would go for more than the buy-it-now price ................
