The light/hair thing? Is is dirt or hair on my sensor or lens or is it light of some description. I noticed it the other night when doing a light trail.

Thank you

Ok thanks. I tried to do a light trail a few nights ago but it started raining so I had to pack up quickly. I looked at my image when I got home and there was the same as above but worse. I've taken 200+ shots since the light trail and they look fine. I killed the bluebottle this morning and it's back!

I've just had a look without my lens and cannot see any glaring problems (hair etc). I always try to swap lenses as quick as I can to limit the chances of dust etc getting in.

If you cant see it without the lens on then the problem must be at the back of the lens or the front glass of the lens. If you've already had a look at the front, then the problem is most definitely at the back and you will need to clean it with caution of doing it yourself.

Did you just have a look at the mirror or did you put the camera into sensor cleaning mode and look at the sensor? Just looking into the mirror box won't actually tell you anything because the mirror moves out of the way when the image is taken, anything on there will only be seen through the viewfinder and not on the image.

Whatever it is it's in very sharp focus so it's almost definitely on the sensor rather than in the lens. Do you have a rocket blower? If so try activating sensor cleaning mode, holding it so the lens mount faces the floor and giving two or three gentle blasts into the mirror box. Hopefully whatever it is will be blown off of the sensor and fall out. Don't panic too much though, things like this occasionally find their way onto sensors and are usually fairly easy to shift. :)

Yes! It's not thread is it!!!???

Ok, just re-read your post. I've not got a rocket blower but I'll get on to it. And yes, you're correct...I just looked inside and didn't look any further:bonk: I'll get on to it thanks

Something's wrong here. If this was something on the sensor, why would it be white?

Jesus Quintana.... take another shot with the camera please, and post it in here. Anything will do... just make an exposure with the same camera and post in here.

Depending on your camera most have a Mirror-Lock up mode to reduce shake / cleaning. Might be worth seeing if your camera has this so you can see if there's anything behind the mirror.

I really, really don't think this is on the sensor. It wouldn't be white... it can't be on the sensor.

@OP... post up another image taken with the same camera.

It's got to be on the subject.

It's definitely on the subject. Definitely.
Unless the OP posts the pic he spoke of in his first post and the shape is exactly the same in every respect I won't be shaken on that.

it looks like a light trail to me, may be a stray reflection ?

The thread follows the contour of the eye and also disappears behind part of the top of the head before re-emerging again.
It's a fibre on the fly's head.

I agree, this fly was in somebody's pocket before the shoot...LOL You can clearly see the depth of the string so no way its on the lens or sensor.

long exposure, pin point of light moving around ?

Yes it could also be a thread on the fly, but surely we have to give the OP some credit for common sense , as that would have been clearly visible through the few finder

There is a small chance it could be sensor damage from something... laser for example.

I'd bet my house it's a fibre stuck to the fly's head though.

That ^^

And this ^^ makes it unlikely its on the fly. Unless of course the fly was in the camera all the time

Well until the OP posts up another image with the same artefact on it, I'm highly sceptical.

if it was a light trail it won't be on the next image

But what could have made such a light trail?

a point light source moving around (that's the usual cause)

I can't think of any possible light source so small that could move in that way, I don't even know of any commonly available lasers with beams so small they'd only cover a few pixels on a camera sensor. We don't know for sure what it is but I think it's fair to say that's the least likely cause.

some tiny mite moving and reflecting the light ? - in usual long exposures the standard cause is flies , but obviously at this scale it needs to be something tiny

I see the OP hasn't returned to this thread even though he has been online, perhaps he has cause for embarrassment

No embarrassment here Steve. I forgot about this thread tbf

Just seen a flurry of replies to this. Why I didn't get an email I'm not sure. Fly must have been in my pocket all along!!
