Can any one help identify this bit of brass?
My parents bought it for me a number of years ago because, I quote 'it looked interesting' !!
We've not been able to find out what it is since.

Our theory is that is is a bit of tack that's been modified, but who knows

Any ideas................

I would have guessed it as being the lock from Marcy's wallet, but then I noticed that the brass thing opens.......unlike Marcy's wallet ! :exit:

:D

If it had a base plate on it I'd have guessed at a stirrup shaped vesta case (match box) with the dimpled foot plate being used as the striker when closed.

Something made for a horse/hunting enthusiast as a novelty fire lighting item because I don't think brass is strong enough to have been used for proper stirrup irons.

Just a wild guess :)

yes, the bespoke equestrian vesta holder was our theory. I'll get some sizes later

Maybe another picture with it alongside something else, for some idea of it's relative size? It looks as if it's supposed to attach to something else (the slot in the 'yolk' type part of it)

SimonTALM has got the original use for it as an old fashioned safety stirrup thats possibly been modified. The tread where the rider would put their foot looks more worn in the middle than on the edges (from the remains of what looks like metal polish showung where the grip is deeper), which would mean it was used as a stirrup at some point. The idea would have been that if the rider fell off the stirrup would open and give room for the boot to come out rather than the rider getting dragged.

Will ask someone I know if she can shed any more light on it.
