Yes
Dont get me wrong, I am not a grumpy old man (yet) but I just dont understand Twitter. What is the point and whats it all about. I was on a business networking forum earlier and looked at someones Twitter posts that day. Nothing at all worth reading!!!

So what is the point? Why should I care that someone is enjoying or hating the snow, or off to Birmingham tomorrow? I saw the post on here asking about celeb followers... not wishing to sound rude but what do people post and why would people want to follow?

How would it help you build your business?

Maybe at 36 I have hit the technology buffers!! Have a facebook account but only use it for PPC on facebook, and not like my wife does!

I joined it to see what all the fuss was about, wrote about 8 lines, wondered if i could post photo's found out i couldn't, can't be asked with it so facebook is far far better and can play cool games like Treasure Madness and join phtography groups and post/upload photo's AND it shows the flickr ones automatically that you've uploaded to flickr on your home page as minitures with a direct link to your flickr :)

I think your right ....Twitter is for the same people that watch big brother...
:gag::razz:

facebook doesn't strike me as any better, I only use it to play Mafia Wars

I hate it!

Sadly I had to open an account for the awareness campaign I'm involved in (cause some halfwit was posing as us!!) and I really can't stand it.

I don't wanna know what someone is having for lunch, who they're getting drunk with and which loo roll they buy in Tesco!

The point is its totally pointless and a complete waste of time.

It seems to have provided a new template for the media. Whenever there's a news story, they immediately scour Facebook and Twitter for details. Have a look whenever some celebrity dies - the media immediately go to the well-known "twitterati", who usually say something along the lines of "So sorry. You were da best m8 ever! :("

Personally, I think it's a load of rubbish, and given far too much prominence and importance by the press.

Personally I use it all the time. You don't have to follow famous people. I post random things during the day and also find it a good source of news and information.
You get to post pictures, web links you name it.

There is no point!!

twitter is mostly for those who write about life rather than living it.

Twitter is for people who have nothing else today and have grow out of texting

You see, everyone I've found who has said they have hated Twitter, has never given it a chance. It really is something you have to put something into, to get anything out of it. Similar to Facebook, if you don't add any friends, your homepage isn't going to be too exciting and you're most likely going to hate it too.

If you find people on Twitter that interest you and follow them and interact, it really is quite useful and fun.

+1 - Twitter is just a communication device, the point of it is whatever you make it. I use it as a live information feed, be it news, photography, other interests...but then I also use it to interact with people, much as I do on these forums. The reason it is so popular is that it encompases many 'new media' elements; information feeds (rss etc), 'social networking' , 'texting' and instant messaging.

To be honest if you are not into your new media or social networking (hate that phrase) then it probably isn't for you :)

I don't recall saying I hate twitter, just that my impression is those who do use it feel they have to write about their life, whereas I prefer to live my life.

Social networking? What's that then guv'? :gag:

I once heard Twitter described as "for the socially inadequate" can't say i would disagree with that :|

I'm sure there must be a pathetic facebook group complaining about the
total irrelevance of twitter and how meaningless it is to type every small
detail of what someone is doing throughout the day ...

Or at least only using it to have an affair ...

.

I don't see the point in Twitter, Facebook or mobile phones. We all did perfectly well without them at one time and I continue to do perfectly well without them now.

I would imagine it's one of the things that if you have to ask then you just don't get it :shake:

Exactly how my parents are! Always been fine with my landline, why do I want a mobile? Never had a computer, why need it now?

However.....they often use my Nokia!!! and I'm often given tasks to do online/print off!

thats the point, people don't talk about their lives, they post links and things people might find interesting, e.g. mine updates people when I post my 365 picture to flickr which they could find handy ect

i saw a twitter celebrity directory in smiths this afternoon, do people actually pay for stuff like that?

actually i answered my own question straight away, the rack was full to bursting and not a single copy looked like it had been read!

I can see the use for that, although it has to be said Flickr already sends my "followers" an email when I update the content. So no real use for Twitter there really...

but this tells them what it is, I don't look everytime a contact uploads stuff but I do follow a few specific projects

It's also great for spreading interesting articles among the people that actually want to read them.

Like blogging most people don't write massively boring stuff about their breakfasts but some do I spose :D

Same could be said for Microwave Ovens but you'd struggle to find a house without one now ;)

That has to be one of the most belligerent responses I've ever seen on this forum. Do you have a source for your quote to give it some context?

You don't find Twitter useful. That's fine. Some people don't have a need or want for it. But don't come on here, quote some uncited source but still agree with them, and label millions of people as "socially inadequate" because you can't relate to a website we find useful. It's unnecessary, offensive, and flat out wrong.

Here's my take on the original posters perfectly fair question:

Twitter solves different problems for different people. There are people who use it for keeping up with what celebs are doing. Some people use it to keep in touch with their friends. Others use it as a form of news reader. Personally, I use it for all of these reasons.

I follow F1 related people and teams to keep up with what's happening on that scene. It's handy when I'm out and about without access to a tele or the BBC iPlayer and want to find out what's going on in practice sessions (I'm nearly always in front of the tele for qualifying and race sessions though!).

I follow friends and associates to see what they're doing. I ask about things they've done or places they've been when I see them next. I'll call or email people who tweet something interesting if I don't have plans to see them soon.

I follow photographers and websites to see what people are doing and when sites post new articles. People post links to images on various sites (flickr, twitpic, etc) so I can see what they're shooting and I sometimes get inspriation that way too.

I follow lots of other interest groups and random people as well; bee-keeping organisations, illustrators, brands I like, and other random but interesting people. If they don't tweet something interesting for a while I'll stop following them.

To summarise: It helps me keep up with what's happening in scenes I find interesting, it introduces me to new topics and it helps see the world through other peoples eyes.

Hope this helps the original poster!

George.

Twitter = RRS.... if you look at most companies that have this sort of thing they also have Facebook and those entries tend to be the same.... why ? because it allows people to keep up to date with them in their own way...

I'm about the same age and in IT my self and I'm yet to find a real reason behind twitter bar the above.

.........

Oh yes, twitter, joined ,watched, binned it.....:D

An interesting twist (sorry to lament on this point but I took offense to the previously quoted post)...

I tweeted that I was replying to thread in which someone had labelled Twitter users as "socially inadequate" and got a reply from Cecilie Harris (a photographer who has recently been spending time in front of the camera, too) saying that "Twitter has made me more social, and enabled me to meet new people".

I guess Twitter, like everything in life, is what you make of it.

you can add pictures and video, loads of clients offer picture uploading and links to the pictures are "tweeted" (twitpic, yfrog etc etc)

Personally I like twitter its just like facebook but with out all the annoying crap. + when you follow the right people some very interesting convo's happen (not a celebrity stalker on it, I like real content and not knowing when someone is taking a dump)

*edit* you can even get twitter clients that link into flickr - i use echofone pro on my iPhone and you can set it up to upload pictures to flickr and share link on twitter.
