What is the difference in a flashgun and a strobist?

Sorry that this is a basic question but what is tyhe difference in these two types?

I'm looking to get something for my 500D and there is that much out there from £35 upwards i just have no idea where to start...

Anyone help at all?

strobist is a slang term for using a flash / speedlight 'off camera' they are the same thing

Strobe is an American term for a flash, same as they call a torch a flashlight.

However more recently, strobist has become a term for off-camera flash, especially on a small budget.

Strobist sounds better than Flashist.

And isn't going to get you confused with members of the BNP
