hi guys, i want to try macro photography. and i'm thinking of getting the

sigma 150mm 2.8 am i on the right track? tnx:)
 
This lens gets some excellent reviews and there are lots of people on this forum with them. Personally I use the Canon 100mm F/2.8 - Just prefer Canon lens's that's all. Both excellent, Sigma cheaper though.

I'm no macro expert but i guess it would help if you let us know what you will use it for mainly?

I've got a Canon 100mm macro 2.8 and i love it, really sharp and 2.8 dives a gorgeous depth of field. I use it mainly for portraits.

The best macro lens is surely the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro. I mean, with which other lens could you fill the frame with a single peppercorn? It's absolutely bonkers.
 
canon 100mm f2.8 for me only had it a couple of weeks and not yet fully tested but so far so good.:)

This is the only lens that would convince me to buy a Canon body, so want one, pity Nikon dont do anything remotely simialr to it.


And the yes the Sigma 150 is superb, chuck a 1.4 tc on it and you end up with 210mm of macroness, I use mine a lot.
 
It's very difficult to define which is "the best" as it all depends what you want it for. I've got the EF180/3.5L, EF100/2.8, EF50/2.5, Sigma 105 and MP-E65 and only the EF100 and Sigma 105 cover the same subject/environment scenarios.

For ultimate quality and build then the 180L and MP-E take the prize but the image quality of all of them is pretty much indistinguishable from the others.

Minolta AF 3x-1x ? I believe that it was out before the Canon (like the Minolta Macro Flash system was out before Canon's) :p

Tamron 90mm is very highly regarded but ~100mm doesn't suit for all situations when you may also want something longer (i.e. something 150-200mm range).
 
I've just got the Canon 100 f/2.8 macro and I'm happy so far with it.
 
I have the 70mm f/2.8 Sigma macro lens and love it, doubles up as a great lens for portrait work on a crop sensor too!
