What is the answer to scumbags on the streets at 3am

I think that our Criminal Justice system is pretty fair as far as it goes - compared to Iraq; Iran; any other ****-hole...

The problem as has been stated here is that prison isn't enough of a deterrent.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona keeps getting re-elected because of his tough stance on crime.
Prisoners live in a tented camp surrounded by barbed-wire miles out in the desert and are fed military-style rations. Meals cost about 40c per serving.
They work on community projects under armed guard - road-building/maintenance etc - classic chain-gang activity...when there were complaints from Civil Rights groups, the sheriff pointed out that the same living conditions were endured by US Troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and if it was good enough for 'Our Boys' then it was good enough for offenders...there were no further complaints.
There was no TV until the Supreme Court ruled that this was unconstitutional, so now they have cable TV locked to the Disney and weather channel: "So they can see how hot it's going to be while they're working..."
The Prison uniforms are pink - pink shirts, trousers and underwear...no-one acts tough dressed in pink, apparently...
Coffee is banned as it has no nutritional value.
The prisoners are paid a stipend for the work they do, but are deducted for food, clothing and lighting.

This county has the lowest re-offender rate in the country and the Sheriff has been re-elected about five times now.

Obviously this is somewhat over the top, but if we stopped hugging criminals and worrying about their rights and started punishing them instead, maybe we'd actually get somewhere...

Maybe then victims wouldn't feel so victimised.

I don't think it sounds over the top at all. Thats exactly what prison should be like.

As far as I'm concerned, we don't have a problem with our laws, we have a problem with effective deterrents, mainly because long term prison sentences are so bloody expensive to the taxpayers.
The thing is they needn't be. Get rid of all the luxuries, and stop paying them compensation because they had to wee in a bottle, changing the direction the ***** pans face so prisoners don't have to face Mecca while taking a dump etc. Make the prisoners work - chain gangs sound fine to me - and the money they earn can go toward their upkeep. Building bigger prisons will provide much needed work for construction trades. Bigger prisons need more guards. Arm the guards with Tasers to help keep order. The perfect irony would be to make the prisoners manufacture the Tasers.
Best of all though, just make sure they are too tired to cause trouble.
I like the idea of pink uniforms too.

what i want to know is how do they manage to get up for school when they are out so late.
oh they are on holiday for the next 2 weeks.

A lot of the time, it's the judges who are the problem with their ridiculous sentences. They don't apply the correct prison term to the crime. The maximum could be 9 years for a particlar offence but the judge will give 2 years with 2 years suspended due to coming from a tough background or something like that. :bang:

At last this week, a judge finally sorted out the Gooch gang here in Manchester and out of 11 members of the gang, 5 got life including one who has to serve a MINIMUM of 39 years. Serves them right for driving round thinking they were Al Capone in Moss Side with uzi's, shotguns and handguns with hollow tipped bullets so people were horribly wounded.

A proper sentence

Reform the Judiciary and decent sentences will follow. Agree though with peoples comments about removing all the comforts and luxuries from prison. It's not a holiday!

Whilst I agree in theory, the problem with putting any weapon into a prison is that that weapon could end up being used against the guards they're intended to protect.

With the number of call centres and other manufacturing going abroad I'm sure there are other countries who would welcome our prisoners ?
A daily fixed rate of 50p to cover their food, should be ample.
I image a short stay in an Indian or Phillipines prison would make the offender think twice about doing it next time ?

so does that mean changing the system so high court judges are more "normal", I can imagine someone who lives in the town affected would hand out proper sentences.

Or are the judges controlled, can they really give a maximum sentence if they feel like it

Yup, and it works brilliantly. As we all know, South Africa has the lowest crime rates in the world and its a really safe place to live.

My god, you are on a little rampage aren't you?!

It was toungue in cheek.... I always used to aim for the head.... :woot:

This is exactly what is needed. Every town should have it's own set of stocks too so we can chuck rotten vegetation at the lesser offenders.

Bring back the stocks - a bit of public humiliation and the chance for the public to get their own back.

Edit : should have continued reading till the end before replying but at least someone agrees with me

One of my comments from a similar thread.

I think the guards should be removed from the inside of prisons, all the doors removed from the cells, all provisions supplied from a secure point and finally all inmates should be armed, for their own protection of cause.

I don't think anything too horrific, but at the moment most people like this have no fear of the consequences because there really aren't any. They would probably evade jail time for first offense doing this anyway.

This isn't the same type of crime obviously, but.. I was in America and on the side of a road between Vegas and Los Angeles "No Littering - Fine $1000" Guess how many bits of litter I saw?

"Vandalism - You will pay for any damages incurred if it comes out of your wages or from your allowance (whatever they get for nothing) until all debts have been paid" Some tweaking on that would obviously need to be done, but gives an idea :)
