What is it about toll plazas.....

Another crazy one is people sitting at a red traffic light who suddenly shunt forward about a meter and stop. And then repeat it again until they run out of room. I caught my girlfriend doing it a while back, so I asked her why. She immediately replied "well to make the lights change quicker". Obvious really.

Anyway I digress. What is a digress? I looked it up. It said "a female diger".

A slightly tweaked MK7 Golf R DSG :) basically a five door family hatchback. Two years old now, getting rid next week.
That's some modification as evo magazine tested it at 4.9 secs, others managed 4.7.
What's the spec of yours then over the standard 296bhp and 280ft/lbs torque and just over 1400kgs? My car is 380bhp, 360ft/lbs torque and 1100kg and I've never got better than 4.1. Only a single gear change from first to second, so that won't make a huge amount. What's the secret of the hot hatch?

What's with people crawling for about 200 yards up to traffic lights?!?!?!? Often see this happening, with no regard for the queue behind them tailing back onto a roundabout or blocking another filter/junction. Do they think they're doing a rolling start for a race, or being environmentally friendly or something? Berks!

I don't understand people leaving a car length or two gap from the white line, although it leads lots of room for me to filter to the front on my bike :)

Evo tested at 4.9 surely the manual version. Mine is a DSG....Plenty of them about modified...Same with the A45 boys...

Make no mistake, the Golf R is a much quicker car than its GTI sibling. With 297bhp and 280lb ft, it simply has more fire in the boiler room, greater aerobic reach at the top end and the all-drive wherewithal to deploy it effectively. The acceleration stats speak for themselves, the sprint from rest to 62mph taking a claimed 4.9sec (or 5.1sec if you opt for a manual six-speed ‘box rather than the DSG double clutch transmission - or if you opt for the DSG estate).

Plus personal experience of two. When the deal came out a couple of people I knew leased them, so of course we went out to play with the hot hatch, fitted it with my gtech pro, couldn't get better than 4.9 but always around just about 5 secs for us normal drivers, but thats still quick for a £240 a month lease car. Hence why I wondered what you did to get yours timed at 3.7. Still a quick car as the normal gti is around 6.3 secs

A45 boys can claim quicker - they've a lot more bhp 0.60 in 4.2 from its 375bhp and 350 ft/lbs torque but its 150kg heavier

As I said mine is tweaked slightly ;) a good friend of mine owns DTUK...

Today I noticed that someone using the Revo map has broken the 3.6 barrier. Ouch that is fast.

I thought the Mercedes AMG A45 put the Golf to the sword.

I remember seeing Clarkson and Hammond raciing a Golf R and A45 against each other in Italy. The Merc was signicicantly quicker but (I think) had a 2.3l engine, not the AMG 2.0l as seen on the AMG list.

It most definitely has that potential indeed when stock. Not that straightforward when vehicles are no longer stock. Both very nice, I couldn't live with the A45 as a daily, I found the R tiring as well. Glad to get rid next week.

Hence why I asked what you'd done to it to get that time above the standard, as you need a lot more power and/or weight loss to make that much difference from standard. Have you timed it?

DTUK make claims of up to 40% more power. What's the actual power increase you have?

Ah found a Golf that does 3.7
http://www.autoblog.com/2014/05/12/vw-golf-r-400-could-produce-more-power-report/

Talking about the Golf R400
we'd guess that, with a DSG and all-wheel drive, the production version could end up running 0-60 in about 3.5.

That would leave the 5-second 0-60 time for the current Golf R in the dust and even eclipse the quoted 3.7 0-62 time for the aforementioned GTI W12 as the Golf R 400 moves on to a new category of super hatches.

Sweet - have you one of those or the GTi W12?

Knocking 1.2 secs off a fast hatch 4.9 sec 0-60 time is impressive with a remap. as the R400 has a lot of engine mods, bigger turbo to get towards that performance

Yup timed it as I said with a vbox. Plenty of report out there if you are interested. There is the r forum as well with lots of information. And Revo seems to have improved further on it now. Don't know why you keep on referring to stock magazine tests as I made it clear in my first post mine isn't stock. What exactly is not for a publicly accessible forum for private reasons.

Actually really interested in what would make a stock car that much quicker , significantly quicker. especially as you said yours was slightly tweaked, then said it was because it was dsg not manual gearbox, then hinted at a remap from DTUK. As I said, I've two colleagues with Golf R's that are coming up for end of manufacturers warranty so are interested in tuning them.

The Golf R400 at 3.9 secs is a heavily modified golf R, modified engine internals, turbo, modified bodywork to aid cooling, to give it 100bhp and 70-80 more ft/lbs torque to knock 1 sec off the standard Golf R, not 1.2 as you claim for yours. So thats not slightly tweaked if yours will do 3.7 secs, thats some impressive work. I've read the Golf R forums but couldn't find any real figures/details. There's a few curves shown, which show some possibilities but only around half the power increase to what you'd need.

You're making some impressive claims without any details. I'm guessing yours is under warranty which must be your reason. The reasons I'm referencing magazine articles on standard cars is to point out how modified yours must be to meet your claimed figures, which would be seriously impressive.

I also have friends who run their TVR's in drag strip races and the amount of work and modifications they do to just get a few tenths performance increase is boggling, including adding nitrous. They also have issues getting the power down? Clutch slip, tyre grip, grippy summer semi slicks.

Since it's a photo site

I would agree with Byker28i, needs a lot more work than just a remap/chip and a serious power increase to make the car that fast. A 1280kg BTCC race car with sequential box and 350-360bhp engine does 0-60 in around 4 secs. For the power increase, as a minimum, I'd be looking at installing cams, intercooler, forged internals, a different turbo set up, sports cat, injectors and a custom map. Probably somewhere between £2500-£4000 work, maybe even more.

@Byker28i you are absolutely right in your assumption on my reasons to be aloof :) I know it works, I'm not alone by far, and it honestly doesn't require as much work as you and @ST3 indicate.

There are a few that really work well in this area and have created impressive results; DTUK, Unicorn, Revo etc.

I was impressed with the Golf R anyway as a cheap performance hot hatch. Even more so if it's possible to wring that much more performance from it.

I've done a 4.1 with mine, with this as a power curve, but then I've only got just under 1100kg, big fat rear tyres...

It maybe possible to achieve it but without the modifications I mentioned, it won't be very sympathetic to the engine and something or things will be taking a very early and very expensive retirement.

It's knocking 1.2 secs off the standard time, which assuming this isn't pub talk is pretty incredible, given the amount of work VW put into the R400 to get close.
Theres mentions on the Golf R forum of additional tuning boxes, various stages of mapping, replacement turbo pipes but nothing along the lines of the R400 work.

There's a post which says DTUK claim 375PS and 527Nm when their kit is fitted! Can't actually find rolling road results, timed run results. Maybe its because I'm guest

That turns us into racing drivers?

Now it me be just me, but there's something about toll plazas, that makes me feel like I'm on the starting line of a grand prix.

All the motorists sat there waiting for the barrier, up it goes and then that's it, everyone racing to get to where it funnels back to 3 lanes.

Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me trying to break up the monotony of 40000 miles a year :)

15 lanes filtering into one is the reason....

...plus it's great fun. Nothing like leaving a big fat number 11 away from a toll booth ;)

TBF it isn't my fuel or tyres for that matter. I balance it though by driving live a granny the rest of the time. I've always wanted a TVR Griff 500 for the noise they make. My dream car though would be a Shelby GT500, the classic not the new one. Can't beat american muscle for the noise :D
FF to 2:37

That "thing" in Gone in 60 seconds is not what a GT500 should look like.

The new mustang is an excellent car for traffic light grand prix's. Was quite fun in the evening in vegas as the locals played occasionally. Someone had a fast and furious replica
I liked our rental, good car

The current design streak of Ford is rather good I have to admit. I like that Mustang...I even like the Mondeo  and the new Edge looks interesting as well...

Bloke at work recently bought a new 5.0 Mustang, he had it almost 2 weeks before he wrote it off.

Careful now, do you want to laydown, or are you ok after admitting that. ;)
The Mondeo's American counterpart, the Fusion, has just had a 325bhp, 2.7L V6 Ecoboost with awd added to the line up.http://www.autoblog.com/2016/01/11/2017-ford-fusion-sport-detroit-auto-show/ It will be interesting to see if we get the same in Europe.

That's clever, I guess all that power, rear wheel drive and our roads. It's a good sized car, cheap for that amount of power, good spec and proper suspension.

Similarly, I saw a 16 plate F Type Jag on it's roof on Thursday ....big oops.

That and in his 20's. Only finished his apprenticeship last September.
In that case I forgive him, I did similar in a capri, old rover 3.5, put a friends 3 wheeler on its roof , none of which went around corners when I was 20. Obviously the roads/cars got a lot better as I got older as I found no such problems in later life

There were a lot of young people that thought that they could handle them, but couldn't.
I had loads from a 3L Auto, MkII terrific fun in the wet, even more so than the 3L MKIII manual that followed it.
The 2.8i was better at handling which took some of the skill out of going fast around roundabouts,
And the 2.8i Special, was definitely the best of the bunch, ( I never did get the "brooklands" or the tickford variants ) top speed was erm, kinda double the legal limit, but even with that one, the nose lifted as that was surpassed that ( or so I heard ;) ) ( oh and not a scratch on any of them, )

I was looking at the website yesterday...On paper a Mondeo or Edge Vignale with twin turbo diesel automatic awd would be nice....Got to drive it first though, but could be an interesting cheap alternative compared to my usual German quality...

2.1 pinto black, body kit, and the damage done by a bmw that didn't stop, left us in a hedge/fence

Then there was the 2.8i (hence part of the username)

which flirted for a while with a standard 2.8i, then an allard turbo engine, then finally a 3.2 long stroke race engine.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts. Ford aren't really aiming the Vignale at people who would normally by an Audi, Merc, or BMW, but rather as an extra upmarket trim level to retain existing customers. I'm sure they won't mind a new customer or two. ;) I don't know what the premium brands have on a £30k+ car, but I suspect they won't have quite a few of the features as standard that the Vignale have. Seen several of the Mondeo Vignale at work, they do look very nice, but I'd want the V6 Ecoboost under the bonnet if I was to have one.

You didn't need a great deal of power to lose the back end of a Capri, I had a 1.6 Laser, a whole 73bhp. (y). Pulling away and turning from a side turning, the road dipped as it joined the camber of the main road, add a damp road surface and giving everything available, the car did a 270 degree spin before I dropped the clutch and the back end snapped back around again. The look on the drivers face behind me was a picture, when I was momentarily facing him.
Whilst the Brooklands etc. are very nice cars, I'd like a Black Mk3 3.0S with X-Pack flared arches, anti dive kit, triple twin choke Webers and after market rear axle stabiliser frame.

Or a "JPS" mk2 S. Black with gold pin stripes.

This thread reminded me of my Caterham days and the race to and from Le Mans. My quickest one for a few months had a Blackbird CBR1100 (170bhp) engine in it and weighed less than 500kg sub 4 sec 0-60 did not start to slow until 140mph. The best bit was it reved to 10,500and would set alarms off driving down the street. It felt quick standing still as had no windscreen. Oh the days before a wife and kids.

A bit of Caterham action and not my car but a very highly tuned Vauxhall known as K2RUM

Agreed they were very tail happy, in which ever guise (y)

Oh yeah that brings back memories (y)

Oh but so controllable, power oversteer, hang the rear out and drift around roundabouts at 30-35mph, nice and safe.
Tried it in the tvr, easily do-able with the power, but harder to balance because of the grip, also easier to get it wrong.
