What Is "Fine Art" Photography?

There is the pretentious artists' answer... then there is the answer my friend who owns a gallery gives - "another 40% on the selling price".

Steve.

Yep... I'll go with that too....

"Fine art photography is photography created in accordance with the vision of the artist as photographer."

...and as such, can't be argued with. Anything else is merely opinion.

This one for me:

"Fine art photography": Also called "decor photography," "photo decor," or "wall decor," this "involves selling large photos... that can be used as wall art"

...and as such, can't be argued with. Anything else is merely opinion.

For me, the definition the Pookster quoted refers to art photography (without the preceding 'fine', and perhaps with a capital 'A').

A subtle distinction perhaps, but people who take Fine Art degrees produce 'art' rather than 'fine art', the Tate is an Art Gallery not a Fine Art Gallery.

Looking at the numerous websites which describe their contents as Fine Art Photography they seem to fit the definition above, it's decorative and conformist.

This is just my opinion - as a non-artist/non-photographer. :)

Hmm.. so if it's available in a large format to put on a wall, it's "fine" art? Conversely, anything small, or not on a wall is not fine art?

Bit prescriptive Ed... :)

So this is fine art?

It's a photo... it's wall decor, and it's being sold as a large photo.. therefore it must be :)

As usual you take me literally. If it's sold as decoration it's likley fine art rather than art - irrespective of size. Although bigger is usually finer. ;)

But that cat print is most definitely high art!

As with all these nebulous, and shifting, terms it really means what you want it to mean. Trying to make a concise definition of it is like herding those kittens. Difficult and essentially pointless.

Hi
Thanks for all replies. The reason i wanted to know is i see some photographers (on the interweb) describe themselves as " Fine Art photographers" or in to " Fine Art photography" and I can't get my head round what they 'do' that's so different.

The art critic Brian Sewel when asked to define art said art was anything you could get away with, I think that sums it up for me very well however you label it.
admittedly I am an uneducated yob.:whistling:

Wiki seems to be covering all bases with than explanation ...I thought I learnt years ago here at TP that fine art photography was when you get a lama or camel or some other such oddity and place it in some sort of measured composition along side or parallel to square box or triangle, or other such unidentifiable pointless object in some sort of arty combination that only makes sense to the artist.

Something like that I'm sure... :D

A good definition of Art is that it serves no purpose other than it's own existence.

Fine art is that but just finer.
