What is a "Good Price" for PX on Canon EF 300mm f4.0 L IS USM

Hi Guys,

I have never done PX on camera equipment, I have always sold privately on Forums or eBay.

However, my wish for a new lens (Canon 70-200 IS II) coincides with my decision to sell an unused lens (Canon EF 300mm f4.0 L IS USM) so I figured I would look at Part Exchange.

This throws up some questions, firstly are some dealers notably better than others when it comes to PX and how do I gauge what is a good PX price?

I have looked on eBay at what the 300mm is selling for but of course, the prices vary widely depending on age, condition, country of origin and the fact some sellers list a buy it now price that is totally unrealistic.

Any thoughts welcome.

I recently got trade in prices ranging from £ 520 to £ 600. These would be resold with warranty for £ 700-£800.

As these guys have to make a profit, and ebay takes a fortune in commission, the way to obtain the best deal is to sell on a forum such as this at a price roughly broadly as what you could expect to receive after Ebay fees have been paid.

:agree:

Many eBay prices seem to be inflated to cover the seller's fees, and it isn't uncommon nowadays to see equipment on eBay that costs more than a similar item bought from a dealer with a warranty. Having said that, there is a bit of a limited market for your lens compared to some other equipment, and you need to be ruthless on grading the condition of it. As an example, Aperture have one that is mint, boxed and guaranteed for £850
http://www.apertureuk.com/canon_auto_focus.html but I've no idea how this compares to your one. On PX I think you might get 75% of that price.

Thanks guys, All understood about eBay, I have over 300 100% feedback on there but I am very selective on when and how I use it :naughty:

After looking around I have gone with WEX, they have offered a fraction above what I had set as my expected figure so I was clearly thinking in the right ball park. They replied with 1 working day as promised and the postage labels will be sent out on Monday.

Not sure how long it takes for them to credit my 'account' with them but it will be spent on One Of These as soon as it is :plus1:

Indeed, I had quotes for my nikon 12-24 DX in mint condition with price range of £120 (London Camera Exchange who was selling 2nd ones for over £500 so neat profit for them if I decided to trade in) to £420 Wex whom I went for as I figured that's the money I would be getting from forum sale and also from eBay after fees would be the same, plus I was after a lens from WEX. So it can vary hugely. As your lens is quite specialist in that sense you will have a decent captive market on eBay. Stick the starting price high and see if u can shift it as the listings are free nowadays. Also consider your sellers fees and PayPal fees. Else u are better off selling it here.

WEX gives you credit as opposed to others who gives u money. Credit means u have to use it up with WEX by buying stuff from them :)

That's all understood Richard, but it's fine in this case because I am buying the 70-200 from them so credit is not an issue.

eBay and PayPal fees are exactly why I will not sell high value items on there.

I cant sell on here because I am banned by the admins. I was banned two or three years back, so long ago in fact I honestly can't even remember why. Nothing dishonest, just a disagreement over their rules on something or other.

i found wex to be exceptional in terms of part-x if you gonna end up using the credit to buy stuff from them. they processed the lens the next day and called me up to tell me that i have been conservative in my assessment of the lens and they were going to give me another £20 for the lens being like new condition...I can't imagine anyone would do that. maybe it was my first part-x and they tried to impress me.

Still no progress on the PX with WEX. After a number of call from me to them and a number of apologies from them to me they still failed to send me postage labels.

Will let you know if and when the PX progresses.

Hang on, i think i got it sent via a courier arranged by WEX. I may have it confused with other services. Also check your spam folder

They offer 2 services, you can opt for it to be collected from your home by a courier that they will arrange or you can opt to receive pre-paid postage labels by email, that you print off and attach to the parcel then drop it in at a post office.

I opted for the latter rather than wait in all day for a courier. The email arrived Tuesday so I got it off to them same day. It has a tracking number on the receipt you get from the post office so I will check later how it's progressing through the post office system

Well the tracking system shows the Lens arrived with WEX at lunch time Wednesday, so the ball is in their court now to see how long or short a time it takes to issue a credit.

Had an email today from WEX confirming receipt of the lens and promising "We aim to inspect items within 5 working days of receiving them so you should expect to hear from us by the end of the day on 30/07/2014 at the very latest". Which all sounds very clear and a reasonable turn around time, so i will let you all know how long it actually takes.

Hi Mark

Out of interest (if you don't mind sharing) what did they offer you as a part ex figure on the 300 lens ?

Be interested as well to see if this changes (hopefully not for you) once they have inspected it...

Cheers

A

Hi Andy, I'll PM you. I am being very careful what I say in here as I don't want to be "accused" of trying to sell anything.

Well better than true to their promise, WEX contacted me today and confirmed they had inspected my 300mm ( A day before their own 5 day deadline) and better still they increased their PX offer by £30 !

So all things considered, notwithstanding a minor hick up sending out the postage labels, I am delighted with the WEX part exchange process. They have good time frames, excellent communication and very competitive PX prices.
