what is A-DEP mode?

Auto DOF the camera will get the best Dof from front to back using multiple focus points.

It's automatic depth of field.....I believe it takes account of the DOF when you have multiple focus points selected and they are registering different distances. The A-dep works out where to put the focus distance so that two or more are focussed for the aperture you are using.

I can remember using that mode for a while when I first got the 20D. Soon gave up on it!

deja vu ?

it doesn't take much to confuse me, and you just did it

I just posted this in the other thread . . .

A-DEP looks at all of the focus points (they all get used even if switched off by manual selection) and selects an aperture (with suitable shutter speed) to ensure that all the focus points are within the depth of field.

I find it useful occasionally, especially if there is a big depth of field.

Last time I used it was a large area (motorbike club stand at a show) where I actually just held the camera up high above my head, pointing in roughly the right direction on widest 18mm and hit the button. Crude but effective.

Doesn't anybody read the manual anymore?

400duser, page 72 of your manual explains it rather well I thought.

Iv never used it properly either, just played around on it.

lol
