1. Depth of field preview does have a use and doesn't just make the viewfinder go dark.

2. Taking landscape photos during the middle of the day is an exercise in futility.

Not true

Just find a different landscape to take....

People are hung up on dawn and dusk being the only time to take a landscape - total nonsense. For every image there is a right time...and for some images the right time can be the middle of the day...

Taking middle of the day landscapes is not futile.... it's just much harder to get good shots... I'm off on a medeteranian cruise this summer where at dawn and dusk I'll always be on the boat not the shore... so it's going to be my main chalenge... I think armed with a poleriser and a few grads i'll be ok... kinda looking forward to the challenge!
 
It could well be the places I've been taking landscape shots because none of them really have that "wow" factor that has been discussed here, although that could be my shots as opposed to the light conditions. I just find the shadows really harsh and unappealing.
