Hi All,

So, I got the camera out this evening for a few night time shots from the garden, just to play about with the camera and get back into things. I have a Nikon D7000...

If i put it on auto and take a shot, I get the automatic and instant photo preview of whatever I've taken, but when I put it in manual, take a 10-30sec exposure, the camera clicks to register that it's taken a photo, but stays black and shows no preview. I have to turn the camera off, back on again and a preview of what I took earlier shows up?

I checked the playback menu and Image Review is On...

Am I missing something?
 
Is long exposure noise reduction on? If so it could be that, after an exposure it records the sensor noise for the same length of time and does some calculation to reduce the noise in the shot. It’s been a while since I had a Nikon but I don’t think it displays anything on the screen during the dark frame.

Soooooo... i found that it was on, turned it off, and it was fine! Thanks so much!

Can you explain in laments terms what it does? And also, how long does it run for? Say I take a 30s photo, will it take another 30s to finish?

Yes - it records the same exposure with the shutter closed. Then it works out where the noise is - and subtracts it from the original image.

Probably. It says in the manual. Just wait for it to finish.
 
Generally flashes NR on the top display when its processing
 
If taking night shot use the long exposure NR. Only switch it off if you are doing night timelapse has you would get gaps between each frame.
 
Must admit, I've never really noticed any real world benefit of LENR when shooting at base ISO. I'm sure technically, there is sound reason to do it but I did some back to back stuff once and couldn't see any difference so haven't used it since.

Worth mentioning on a loosely related subject, it's worth covering the viewfinder during long exposure to avoid light leakage. Particularly if you're wearing a head torch or in the OP's case maybe lights from the house.
