What have I done wrong?

I have always used "save for web and devices" in CS3 to get my images to the size for this forum without any obvious problems, but today, it all seems to have gone wrong.

The original raw file was 3888px x 2592px (from my Canon 40D). I cropped it a bit, to get a better rule of thirds composition and this took it down to 3521 x 2489 px. I then did a "save for web" to 800px longest edge and optimised to 200k.............as I have always done in the past.


However, it looks all blocky and horrid...........so what have I done wrong? Is there a better way to get images to forum size?

Did you set the compression too low? I imagine that would give that result.

I tend to resize the image in PS first and do the necessary sharpenning and then save for web afterwards. That way you can see what you've got before you save.
 
Possibly the compression has been adjusted, try it again and just set it to 100% thats what I normall do.

This is a guess, could it be that some of the colours are not web safe. I can't remember how to check the colours for the web.

Try this
Open the picture in Photoshop.
Go to view > Gamut Warning.

If the blotchy areas go grey it wont print very well.
Not a complete answer I know but it might be a clue.

Oh dear....the sky all went grey, as you said it might! Do you think this is because I am using my laptop to do the processing? I'm away from home and have no other option.....unless I leave things till I'm home again.
 
Looks like it could be 'banding' to me... maybe.

If it is, rather than me try to explain it (badly probably!), I googled a reasonable explanation HERE go to page 2/3 for the more relevant bit.

Oh... and FWIW, I really like it as it is! :-)

Thanks Flashman.....I just read the article and it was very informative. I'll bookmark that page for future reference as some of the other articles look good too.

I did do all my work in 16 bit (levels, curves and cloning out dust bunnies) and only converted to 8 bit for saving as jpeg, so I am still wondering if it's something to do with my laptop. I'll try it again once home and using a calibrated screen.

shame you over-wrote the original as we can't see the problem now :thinking:
 
Can't see the original now, but i'm almost sure it's not your laptop that's at fault, unless you are using different editing software on the two different computers.
