woooooooooo been following this for a while (your progress to MF not the item) I wanna see some shots now (I also want an MF body but I will learn home developed 35mm properly first as I have one of those already)

Ideal portrait tester...sleeping babies
When timing an exposure, remember to count in.....elephants

Hey that's fab! Welcome to the MF club. :)

Need to gt mine back out now. lol. You should find that 150mm lens to your liking. I've got one for the Mamiya and it's a great portrait lens.

Well done :)

yeah im feeling pretty excited, paid more than i wanted (hell i can always sell it if i need to) but got the 150mm lens, 6x6 format and have the opportunity to get a metered prism in the future. schweet. thanks everyone for the help

Congratulation on your new baby, and your sister's too :p

I am sure this is something you will love dearly, enjoy

Nice one fontmoss looks like a nice camera

Congratulations to your sister as well.

You can now learn the beauty of the square format and you'll forget all about that D700

Congratulations, prepare for equal measures of elation and frustration from now on

The 150mm is a good length, I don't know if the F3.5 is different to my F4 in close focussing distance but the F4 won't focus close enough for a tight head shot. You have two options, one is buying a +1 close up filter and the other is cropping your image later on. The latter is no problem because of the lovely big negatives. Now go and buy yourself some film.

yeah close focus could be a pain but as you say, acres of space to hack away at. cheers all for the help, let´s hope it works out

extension tubes look expensive, hmm filter first methinks (well actually maybe i should take a few shots first, min distance is 1.5m which isnt too bad

cheers foodpoison, if it doesnt work out ill let you know

....the F4 won't focus close enough for a tight head shot.

Can't get over how weird that is, never shot an SQ, the Bronicas were famous for focussing very tight, no other manufacturer of this camera design came close, I know my EC did.
Strange they should alter that for the SQ range.
I wonder if its anything to do the move from focal plane shutters to leaf shutters...

I'll post some photos in a bit with the Bronica close up filters I've got for my camera. Most are shot on 150mm f/4 but gives you some idea

Did you get some genuine Bronica filters or are you using an alternative brand? Do they make an appreciable difference and does it effect the DOF and the aperture you have to use?

If I get time I'll try and post an example, it might be that the square format makes things look worse as there's that extra room around the sides of the head that you don't get with oblong.

I got some actually Bronica filters, CUL-1, CUL-2

That was with 150mm and CUL-1 & CUL-2 on a 6x4.5 back

hmm think ill get a filter, im also interested to see if bronica filters make a difference.

thats a -1 rather than +1

medium format, i wont laugh. search this forum but be warned once you start reading you may end up buying one.

i took just over a week

Yea well it's just how Bronica filters are named, doesn't make sense really but basically it is +1 and +2

Mine are the OG Bronica ones and it's really nice to use

Yea +1 is fine, I just got both as the Bronica ones tend to be quite rare

It all depends on what type and how close you want to get with them

+1 get for portrait shots
+2 better for detail close up

Have a look on Flickr at close up filter shots with Bronica here. Gives you some sort of idea really

cool +1 will be fine for now, £35 though cant find anywhere selling them cheaper.

EDIT: the next thing to ask is what film to get started with? b and w (think theres a couple rolls included actually)

cheers cherryrig, the first portrait there is one i liked when looking through SQA work.

whats MF i feel silly now *** i can hear you all laughing at me

MF is Medium Format, its a range of film & frame sizes over 35mm.
Over 56mm width btw is LF - Large Format measured in inches, the smallest being 5x4.

Confusingly, MF is also used for Manual Focus but as you have already found out, it means Medium Format in this case.

Actually, it's both. The Bronica SQ is MF MF!

Steve.

actually MF MF MF

Mo Fo Manual Focus Medium Format :)

Glad to see you got yourself sorted Dave, looking forward to seeing some shots from the new acquisition ;)

You have got me thinking about selling my ETR-Si kit though, its not seen a shot for 6 months, and less thana dozen rolls of film since i bought it 10 months ago - always considered it a bit of a novelty buy for me and its worked out that way by the looks :(
