I cant bloody believe it, so there I was at work (i'm a builder) trying to lift a man-hole cover in a private car park when all of a sudden i here a ripping noise. Then much to my delight i realised that the little finger on my left hand would not move!!! and when i say it wouldn't move i mean that all the willing and brain power i was sending the bloody thing it was not budging.
So after a quick tidy up and the drive home, the ever so lovely wife drags me by my ears to A&E where i sit until 2.30 in the morn to be told by a 'ever such a nice young plastic surgeon' that the tendon that connects to the tip of my finger has ripped off and has managed to spring its self back into the palm of my hand. Great!
So after a return visit and a 5 hour operation which involved cutting my finger and half my palm in half to find and re-attach my tendon back into place, the lovely nurse on the hand therapist ward continues to tell me that my hand and arm which is now in some kind of half cast will remain like so for 5 WEEKS an i cant drive for a further 8!!!!
So in other words for the next few months im screwed. and to top it all off im self employed so no worky no earny.
On the bright side the surgeon let me watch the op so i got to see all kinds of things going on inside my finger, until that was when he decided to knock me out as it wasn't going to be a 5min job!

Ouch ... still could have been worse, might have been your shutter finger! :D

Ouch, sounds very painful, on the bright side though, you can still type with the other hand and post here to relieve the boredom of the next few weeks :)

Oooh not sure which is worse, what you've done or actually hearing it !!!!

Get well soon and hopefully all is okay...

yep i think here is going to be a lot of internet browsing going on over the next few weeks although i need to try and restrict my temptation on spending money.

Ouch ouch ouch is all I have to say to that but at least your ok that's the main thing, I understand your self employed issues I am as well and I am not earning thanks to flooding and nasty weather. So it is not safe for me and my motorbike at the moment. I wish your little finger a speedy recovery and don't go spending any money on photography items it's to expensive whilst not working.

Having heard a couple of Achilles tendons go when I used to work at a squash club and the resulting screams of agony, followed by several weeks in plaster after the ops, I reckon what Rob's actually done is far worse than hearing it happen!

Hope you're back to full fitness soon, Rob.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Been at the hand therapist today, needless to say she managed to get my finger to do things beyond my realisation although im bloody suffering for it now!! Why does those 4 hours between pills always seem to drag on and on!!

Rob, both my Grandfather and Father damaged their finger ligaments and both didn't do the exercises the therapist gave them. Oddly, both ended up with permanently crooked fingers as a result! They may make it ache like **** but if they keep full movement, they'll be worth it. Might be worth asking if you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol, leapfrogging them as it were, so you're only 2 hours between relief. Check with your GP or pharmacist.

I was in an unfortunate "accident" in July which inovled the tendons in my little finger getting snapped clean through. I didn't realise at the time, and stupidly didn't do anything until I wondered why 2 weeks later it didn't bend. Went to hospital, and to cut a long story short, they put me into surgery immediately o cut it open and stick it togheth again. They did this, and put me out of action for about 6 weeks - self employed/student as well, so was pretty screwed. Sadly, the therapist afterwards kind of messed up/was constantly switched between different hospitals and ended up with this delightful finger as you can see. Its bent in that position permanently and doesn't move at all. I've got an appointment with a private surgeon next week, hopefully it will be made better in some way. Moral of the story - always always make sure the therapists are giving correct advice and what to do - if in doubt seek proper advice. I'm stuck with this now, an ever painful reminder of a time that I desperately want to get out of my memory and move on. :( Its only a liteee finger, but its suprosing how much of an impact it actually has on day to day stuff.
