What has been your most defining camera purchase?

For me it's my Canon 70-200L IS F4.
I've only had it a few days but after having a play with this lens a few months ago and being left with a desire to own one, after holding my first white L lens it was like a spark was set off within me :D

Originally, going from point and shoots to the Nikon N90s 35mm SLR. Going digital after that with the D100 just allowed me to learn a bit faster, but it wasn't groundbreaking for me.

My biggest defining moment after that was getting my first pieces of "pro" glass, the 300mm f/4 AF-S. The speed, IQ, DOF and creativity compared to consumer quality zooms at the 300mm end just made a world of difference to me. I shot pretty much everything I could with that lens (even people, I just got WAY WAY back), and will never get rid of it (even if I do eventually get the f/2.8 :D).

I was going to say my second digital camera - a Sony DSC F717 - which really started to get me enthusiastic about taking pictures of things other than my 2 year old son, but I think the one bit of kit which gave the biggest boost to my ability to take photos was my Canon 50mm f1.8.

I'd had some sub-par telephoto as my only lens for a Canon 10D, and not been happy at all with the results. Picked up the nifty fifty in Singapore, and the results blew me away. Nosiy and slow to focus, but the clarity, light and IQ was incredible. Sold me on Primes (it's taken me seven years to buy another zoom) and sold me on photography as a serious hobby.

If you'd asked me that a week ago, I would've said getting my first DSLR which was my D90. Now having bought the 35mm 1.8 on Saturday, I'd have to say the 35 now is. It's cracking wide open, and so sharp.
