What happened?

What the hell does peas and rice mean? lol

I can understand you missing certaub awesome photogs and all, I mean hell, I miss Ansel, but you don't see me saying that everyone since him is rubbish.

I'm not saying that, at least thats not what I wanted to say. I do admit that I have been feeling a little down about some images. Flowers, macros, pets, just don't really interest me. There are people who post great photos that inspire the forum and I miss their work.

Annnnnd here we go...

Oh look I get the final word again.

We're all different.
I sort of understand what pete is saying. What inspires some of us, doesn't inspire others.
He is simply saying he misses being inspired by the older members, such as Mohain and Diego Garcia etc.

Thats not wrong in itself, but what it reads like, is that it seems like Pete is saying that no shots inspire him at all. Well, fair enough, if they don't thats horses for courses.
There used to be some very prominent members that used to post some stunning shots, like has been said. They don't post so much anymore. Maybe theyve moved on, maybe theyve stopped posting for other reasons. That's by the by. The point is, they've stopped posting.
I used to like 'fingerz' urban type shots (I think it was him), he doesn't post as much anymore.

We all have to understand we all have different opinions, values, and tastes. I don't like pictures of birds and what not, so they don't inspire me whatsoever.
I used to like the HDR city stuff of petes, and while I still think it's pretty, it doesn't inspire me, and I'm no longer overly keen on them.

The thing is, it's that time of year when people aren't inspired anyway, so feelings are emphasised and exaggerated. Its cold out, its dark alot of the time, and getting out there to be inspired to take photos is a pain.

There has been some great work posted here recently, and some work that does need improvement.

The thing is, we're all here to help each other, and MAKE that improvement.
If we all stick together and comment on each others work in a constructive and helpful way, then we can all make improvements. No one on this forum is beyond making improvements, I'll eagerly say that.

So instead of wondering where the older members have gone, and remembering fondly the shots of old, lets get out there and get making some new ones!

We're all here to discuss our hobby, lets inspire each other and give each other a boost!
I'm not saying lets all go around posting 'great shot' on every single thread.
Just think about what youre saying when replying to a photo, and think about what you would do differently, either with post processing, or photographic technique...what you think might make it better.

We're all here to improve our photography.

That will be all.

If members want to continue their lives on other forums, thats their choice....we have no influence over them thats life on the internet. Quite often it's RL that draws them away.

I often go through phases on other forums which see me float away for months on end before I get the bug back and post again it doesn't mean I don't like the forum any more?

I tend to agree that there hasn't been many "wow" images posted here lately. BUT....that is in no way saying that everything posted recently is bad. It isn't. There are many, many excellent pics posted on here every week. It's just the truly outstanding images that have been short on supply. Maybe we were spoilt with them for too long!

As has been said many times, photography is so subjective and everyone will have different opinions, there's not really any right or wrong, so as long as people don't try and force their opinons on others, they should be respected. We live in a democracy don't we?

So instead of wondering where the older members have gone, and remembering fondly the shots of old, lets get out there and get making some new ones!

Here here!

I'm getting so bored of all these thread appearing that decry the demise of some of the older members. Some of the new members here have been posting some great shots - let's give them some encouragement. make them feel welcome and just accept that times change, people move on. This place CAN be as good as it ever was if some people will just accept that it's an evolving entity :)

OK Pete, I know you're a good guy really. :)

I may have been a member here for a while but still feel new. I wish I'd had the courage to post when I first joined but wanted to get a feel for the place first. I visit most days and have always found a few of, what are to me, WOW photo's. It's only recently I've felt able to comment more than 'nice pic' or 'not for me'. I still can't offer advise on technicalities but feel I am getting to grips with composition.

TP is like a photography mag, with news, tutorials, sales/wanted and letters to the editor (OOF) etc. and I always look forward to reading it.

Your OP knocked me back and perhaps I should have took the time to read it again before replying. (I'm female so allowed to 'take the huff'. :) ) I do think though you are in a very argumentative frame of mind tonight.

Good night, sleep tight, tomorrow is another day. :)

Oh and I totally do. I've posted in every other end of TP thread saying how things haven't got worse and such. Maybe its just a Sunday thing :D

Only if we're all clothed. I'm not having a repeat of last time.

I shudder to think that someone will be sucking that thumb.

Great ending (?) to this thread guys, could only happen here.

Ok. My bad. Pete didn't say that everyone else was rubbish. I misunderstood I assume. (not the first time, won't be the last lol). He did, however, basically say that every photo posted in the past month is rubbish. Bold words if you ask me, especially when opinions vary greatly.

And pete, I can certainly understand you missing posts of photos from people you admire and whose photos inspire you, I just don't see how a post like this would make it better. If anything, it's going to make people think twice before they post.

Me chiming in on this post is very much so out of character for me as I usually sit back in the background and let others do the talking. However, a few posts in this topic verify the fact that your thread is directly the cause of someone not posting anymore and that is not something that needs to happen.

And yes, I'm all about a group hug.

and only one person quoted my final thought!

you all suck!

:naughty::naughty::naughty:

It was me!!!! mwahahaha
tho u are nowhere near as knowledgeable as Jerry, lets be honest!! ;)

This is a bumper post - I stay offline to catch up with some work and look what I find when I come back!!

I read the op as being that Pete missed the input from some peole who inspired him, to be honest I'm the oposite to him in that I rarely look at the pictures because to me they are so far ahead of anything I could produce its depressing :lol: just goes to show the depth of the knowledge on here between those like me who don't have an eye for a picture and those who do and who help people like me to improve.

Perhaps I should just join in the group hug, it sounds a lot easier to do than trying to take pictures :D

We're all here to discuss our hobby, lets inspire each other and give each other a boost!

We're all here to improve our photography.

As a newbie here who rode into town on the Guardian 'stage coach' I can't rave about this place enuff to people. I've bought 2 people along with me too who are new to photography and we're all learning SO MUCH from this place.

I would dare to say that my photography has lept on in bounds with what I have told here by older or more experienced members.

Just thought I'd throw that into the mix :D

Thanks chicks and chaps for all the great info you give us...

I am newish here, and just a few personal choices I have made and thoughts I have.

1: Do not expect any feedback on any images.
This is a very busy place, and as such, images, especcially ones which lack that "extra something" may easily be missed. Take this as a hint, "Not the best, keep trying". No feedback for me means I should look at the shot more on my own and try and work out what I feel about it without the feedback from others. Its far too easy to take a few snaps and then upload expecting others to tell you what you should already know.

2: Don't take negative feedback to heart
I am guessing if you are posting an image for comments, you are not simply asking for a "Wow, thats superb!!". If someone doesnt like it for ANY reason, live with it, and take their comments on board IF YOU THINK the comments will help. Never, ever take it personally - if we all like the same photo's, or same styles, the forum would be a very boring place! Learn from all comments, good and bad, and don't slap someone down when they critisize your work, otherwise you will put them off being honest which is unfair for other users.

3: Don't post poor quality shots (relative to what you are capable of)
If you know you can do better, and you know that with a little extra planning and time, that you can improve on the shot, then why post? You already have the feedback you need. Go get that better shot, and only when you are happy with it (and proud of it), should you post it. Then the feedback will be over and above what you already know.

4: It's just a bloody forum!!
People really need to chill out :) This can be a real friendly place, and is a great resource (I have learned shedloads in the few weeks I have been using the forum), however, a lot of people read into the various threads etc too deeply. It's a text based forum (well its image based too!!!), however, textual chat is not great for showing emotion, so you should avoid reading into other peoples comments as overly negative or insulting. Water and a ducks back spring to mind, it's just a forum people, and how many of us really know each other?

More to say but I am aware this post is huge so will stop :)
Gary.

Lastly...

I would love to comment on all photos, even if all I say is "Great" or "Not for me"...

However...:)
The current forum system for me is difficult and time consuming to check each and every image!!! There are 9 or 10 different areas depending on the type of photo, and checking each and every one of them for new pics could take HOURS per day. Replying could take absolutely ages too.

What would be ideal, is a "master image bank" which sticks every single image posted for feedback into a central vault in order of date with a thumbnail, and each thumbnail could have a little number underneath which states the number of comments to date. You could show 100 thumbnails per page, and clicking on a thumbnail would open the thread with image for commenting...

I understand what I have suggested is not easy to implement, but I bet it would result in much wider posting of comments on all photos which have been uploaded!!!

Probably best we close this thread. There's really no point in everyone posting everything that's wrong with the world, again.

Its pointless. We've been here before so many times. "Oh no-ones commenting" and so on. That wasn't why I started it. Go find Matt's thread.

It has come up lots in your thread too though, so pefectly on topic :) Merely a suggesting on how to improve on the "problem", if it is a problem.

One or two people who have replied to this thread have ONLY MENTIONED the fact that their photos are not being commented on, hence my suggestion.

Gary.

Even though it has I just don't want this turning into a 10 page whine fest about whats wrong with TP. The moment has passed now and nothing else is really going to come out this thread besides bad opinions of me.

Well I haven't formed a bad opinion of you. Reading it from start to finish, sounds like most people complaining about you haven't understood your initial comments. To me I read:

"I miss my old buddies who took some amazing shots". I read nothing else into it, and I don't think there is anything wrong with the way you feel. Photo's touch people in many different ways, and are very personal. Photos will also look and feel different depending on your frame of mind at any given time. Therefore, its perfectly natural for you not to have found inspiration from any of the recent shots (and its fine for others to fine bags of inspiration). It's also perfectly normal for you to miss your old forum buddies.

You don't need to justify it :)

Gary.

On my comment which people are also taking in the wrong way (well i believe they are) i in no way meant there way anything wrong with "great shot" posts but sometimes you see a picture that would benefit from some pointers, even someone that doesn't count themselves as 'good enough' to give advice is able to say "i like this....but i think that ...(a bit lighter - not cropping that part etc).. would improve it".

Well I'm not! :bat:

Only kidding!:D:D
