Sorry Adele, but I don't feel anywhere in any of my posts in the thread you are referring to said anything to the point of me preferring a "clique" of old. I don't ever remember there being an elite of professional photographers posting fantastic images day in, day out with everyone saying how stunning they were. Its never been like that here.
I too feel that what Pete has posted is harsh, I thought to myself "surely what he's saying here is that anything posted in the last month or so by anyone is pretty much mediocre and not worth commenting on". Maybe thats the case in his opinion.
Theres always been an issue with people not feeling they are "qualified" or a good enough photographer to pass judgement or say whether or not they like a shot when someone posts up an image for comment. Obviously the more members we have that are new to photography means that you just get more people who are worried that they aren't good enough to comment.
I felt like that once, for a few months after I joined. I had to force myself to get over it and started to post on a couple of threads that people created. Soon it was easy, I was able to tell people what I liked about a picture. It was harder to tell people what I didn't like but as long as this is done in a constructive way it can only help the photographer.
Now I haven't commented or posted up any photos for comment for quite a while. I have my own reasons for this which I don't wish to discuss here.
Members, new and old need to overcome the fear of not being good enough to comment on photos and start to say what they do and don't like. If its a great shot, say so. If its not, what would you say the photographer could do differently if they were to try it again.
I don't think that any form of elitism is good, there should be no "I'm better than you, all my shots are great, I can't learn anything" attitudes whatsoever. We're all capable of taking excellent shots and we're all more than capable of taking shots fit for the bin - which is where most of my stuff from the last few months has ended up.
