With a couple of weeks to go to bonfire night I haven't heard a single firework so far  normally they are being set off about a month before .... Has something changed? or is it just down to the weather or what? Personally speaking I wish the public sale of fireworks was banned :D or perhaps I'm just a grumpy git

I have bought a couple of chinese floating lanterns to release and watch. From the pound shop, so £2 for twenty minutes x 2 of visual effect. And maybe a photo opportunity..............Much cheaper than rockets and all that.

I agree.

Oh and one more point, I thought we weren't supposed to celebrate sectarian activities in our society?

It wasn't just the defeat of Guido to blow up the H of P, but about Catholics and Protestants.

A few hundred years of nonsense if you ask me.

I love 'em, I wish you could buy the really loud ones too, but alas no, the nanny state takes over again, I know there are some idiots out there but we shouldn't all suffer just because of them.

Pagan/Sectarian/pointless/children's excuse for knees up? Certainly is!! long may it continue!!

Only one incident around here, two nights ago. But they went on for ages. Gits!

I thought there was a move to ban them except for Nov 5th?

Try northern ireland, you need a licence to buy them, stating things like the actual day they will be used etc. (though like most things, you can probably obtain them without such a licence)

When it came into force it did make a big difference (imo, from looking out the window) to the number of fireworks let off at festive events. Does spoil the fun at little for those who will act responsibly though.

It's probably because it's now illegal for under 18s to have fireworks in a public place.

It is an offence under section 80 of the Explosives Act 1875 to throw or set off fireworks in any highway, street, thoroughfare or public place. The power to enforce this section of the Act rests with the police. Anyone found guilty is liable to pay a fine of up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to six months. Penalty notices for disorder (on-the-spot fines) can also be issued for this offence, attracting the upper tier fine of £80.

In Regulations made under the Fireworks Act 2003, it is also an offence for the under 18s to possess fireworks in a public place and for anyone to let fireworks off during night hours (11pm to 7am). Police also have the power to issue penalty notices for disorder for these offences. Again, the offence attracts the upper tier fine of £80.

Actually, I have noticed how things has been very quiet on the fireworks side over here. Usually I start to hear and see them being set off three weeks prior to the "official" day.
Even though I absolutely detest Christmas and everything it stands for, along with Easter Day, Halloween and gawd knows how many other "celebratory days" there are, I don't mind fireworks night at all. It adds a bit of colour and "zing" to the night sky. Mind you, I should imagine the temporarily increased pollution probably doesn't do much good for those suffering from asthma and chest problems,

You make a good point there, maybe as these will increase our carbon footprint there should be an extra green tax on bonfires and fireworks, or a told ban. :D

I don't mind Firework night either but I do object when it seems to last for three weeks instead of maybe the one it should.

Flo used to go and hide in the shower and shake everytime they were going off. At least if its only limited to a couple of nights the pets who don't like it have less suffering.

Probably more to do with the recession that anything else.

I used to love them when I was a kid, and I suppose we did some pretty irresponsible things with them too. Not so sure now, a lot of animals are petrified, but we didn't even think about that then.

to be honest i reckon it is more to do with the recession !! , even the local shop owner was complaining about the downturn in lambrini and white lightning sales !! , seriously though it is for the good in my opinion , after having seeing a house burned out because of a firework through the letterbox ( thankfully it was empty and the fire brigaded were there within 3 minutes ) i personally think they should be banned from public sale , cue the civil liberties brigade coming down on me like a ton of bricks :bang:

Not the civil liberty people but you do sound like the fun police.

no , not the fun police , it only takes one idiot :cuckoo: , would you like to be woken to your house burning down around your ears ? , would you like to come home after a night out to see blue lights from fire engines ? , of course you are going to say it will never happen to me , i wont be surprised if you do , i just hope in all seriousness that it never happens to you and yours , always asuming there are 'yours' to worry about :)

you think you'v got problems with fireworks? some **** heads have set fire to a trailer park 2 nights on a run about 1/4 of a mile from my house, the smoke outside is so thick, even with the doors and windows shut, the smell is still coming through the airbricks below the floors.

I actually like the smell of gunpowder!

That could be said for anything though. I could come home one day to find a car parked in our front living room. That doesn't mean I want cars banned from public sale. Seriously some people take this hole firework thing a bit to seriously.

Like most things we enjoy in life there will be a small minority of people abusing it and ruining it for everyone else.
