Yes
Could have sworn there was a thread on here about nasa was making some huge announcement this week. Anyone heard what it was or if it was as huge as it was supposed to be?

Seemingly chemical compounds indicative of organic life have been found but verification that mars rovet didn't bring bring still needs to be done. I think someone got a little over zealous but facinating none the less and good indicator of possible extinct life. but not life itself as was hinted at!

that's not the story Rich. I was looking for the announcement earlier and noticed your thread.
I think Sam summed it up though ... all a bit of nothing so far.

They made it. Apparently space is REALLY dark. :D

Actually Rich, maybe they found some horses on Mars that were due for slaughter ;)

OR...maybe they discoverd that Mars is made of Soft nougat, topped with creamy caramel and surrounded by chocolate :)

Ah found the original thread...

Life on Mars - what are the implications for religion?

First off I just want to make it clear that this thread is not meant to offend anyone of any religious denomination, I just want a mature and sensible discussion of a very interesting and relevant topic.

With NASA poised to reveal "something earthshaking" on December 3rd, there is a massive amount of speculation that this could finally be evidence that life once existed on Mars.

You can read the latest from Curiosity here.

The scientists from the Mars Science Laboratory mission had some good news and bad news at the much-anticipated briefing from the American Geophysical Union conference today. The good news is that all instruments are working well on the Curiosity rover, and they have found some potentially interesting compounds … organic compounds. The bad news is they are not sure if the organics are from Mars or not.

no, that's the story Rich was referring to.

As previously pointed out by Sam and backed up by Ruth and now Ricardo, the (non)story is to do with Mars

A team of scientists announced on Monday that the Mars Rover Curiosity had found evidence of organic compounds on the Red Planet.

Martian soil samples analyzed aboard the rover revealed "water and sulfur and chlorine-containing substances," the space agency said in press materials.

Scientists will now have to determine whether the compounds are indigenous to Mars. There is a possibility that the organics could have come to Mars from Earth aboard the rover. There is also a chance that they could be materials that had fallen to Mars from space.

The Martians took out a super injunction to block the story.

They are sending another probe?

Actually a new rover has just been announced.

Yeh heard that as well today Rich. I wonder how many more it will take before they have to introduce road network up there  Well if Mars ever gets visited by Aliens in a few hundred years time, there will be thousands of robots running around and no sign of life, that will confuse them

With all the hardware they are sending to Mars will any earthly bugs, viruses, bacteria etc. get transferred and we infect the whole place.

I know the kit is de-contaminated but Demestos can only kill 99% of germs.

The next Mars probe will be taking a supply of traffic cones and diversion signs in preparation for that :)
