What frames do you recommend?

I want to get more pictures up around the house, was thinking of getting random frames from somewhere and having a bit of a mix and match approach. Guessing some will be smallish (7x5 or 8x6) and some bigger (12x8 or the odd larger one). Could use the likes of John Lewis, did look on amazon and a huge choice but was not convinced about the quality, and many have plastic and not glass.

I did like some of the 'template' ones where you get a number (like 9) of various frames and a template to hang them in a nice way, but many of these had some dodgy reviews. Do use Kaleidoscope for clients at times but not looking to spend that sort of money.

So where do you use for frames?

I settled for Ikea's metal frames…

The most important is that the picture is well mounted.
The suggested frames are looking good and modern so
the client, or you, may change them as they're cheap!

I've used some cheap ones from ikea, ribba I think. There ok but don't do anything for a3+. I spoke to a couple of local framers and got a range of prices - some very expensive.
 
+1 for the IKEA Ribba frames.

The Range can have some nice frames in, and don't overlook TK Maxx. Sometimes the best frames come with a print already included, easy enough to discard. Custom frames always cost an arm and a leg.

Charity shops are good for the mix'n'match approach, If they're a bit naff/boring a shake-can of spray paint can work wonders.

I've also made glass-less frames from lengths of dado moulding using a mitre saw for the corners.
 
I use either plastic or veneered chipboard frames from a local Lincoln shop. Not the best quality but cheap enough that I can afford to frame my pictures without worrying about my budget. I use the same for exhibiting on the basis that the purchaser (please!) can choose and pay for a frame to suit their decor/budget.

But I read some when of what was called a chop service......you buy the frame as a mitred set but then really need as read it an underpinner for fixing them together to a good standard.

I would think a decent way to do it if you are happy to buy the underpinner but do not want to keep lots of mouldings in stock?

Thanks for starting this thread @cambsno. I've been needing frames for a while and had no idea where best to go. May try Ikea later :)
 
I visited Ikea today and went a tad overboard. Now I've a dozen frames of varying sizes to fill [emoji85]
 
I've just been asked about selling frames, first time ever and it's quite a big order too. After a Google search I'm swaying towards Picture Frame Studio in Cheshire, all custom made and seem very reasonable prices. Just asked them for more info, so will see what they say.
 
If you want a slim profile metal edged frame then Nielsen Classic works well. The frame is gloss; unfortunately the glass in their matt frames is of a lower grade and has a slight greenish cast.
I also used Coswold Mounts to cut the matte window to size and supply mount board and tape.

fwiw I find prints for frames much bigger than 50x40cm difficult to handle; I get a pro to do those using Classic frames.
I've occasionally replaced the supplied glass in frames with ArtGlass UV WW - it's very expensive but colourless and almost completely reflection free - but still provides UV protection.

They are trade oriented and the prices shown do not include VAT but they will sell to anyone who meets the minimum order value of £150.
