hey, looking to get a lens for cricket and other sports next season, i took this last year but its heavily cropped just showing it to get an idea of the field of view i want really, was about 80-90m away. ill be shooting on a canon 50d would 400mm do it,as i'm thinking of getting a 70-200 so i can put a 2x tc on it?

I can't really see the point in getting a nice sharp wide-aperture lens just to stick a 2x TC on it thereby losing both aperture and sharpness. I'd only consider the TC if you already have the 70-200mm F2.8 and need the extra reach. I'm not a Canon user but the 100-400mm seems a better potential choice for cricket matches. OK it's only F5.6 but you'll have good light most of the time because they stop play when it's bad. :)

well the logic behind that is i was looking at getting one for ice hockey and other sports were 200mm would be enough and f2.8 would be an advantage if that makes sense, i have started to think about a few other options like the 120-400mm sigma's instead. but still the main question is will that be long enough?

cheers

The equation is quite simple...
Distance/frame width (or height) x sensor size (width or height)

For your example;
90m / 2.5* x 14 = 504mm shooting in portrait orientation.
*my estimate of the width of the frame at the image plane.

they look really nice what length were they taken at 400mm? was there much cropping involved?

cheers

Mostly 400 on a 7D these were shot at Lords which is a big ground and often from the upper tier...

They are cropped in quite tightly 50%-70% crop...

ah okay mine will mainly be used at trent bridge again not a small ground but from right on the boundary pretty much, do you find 400mm enough or would you prefer it longer?

cheers this is a real help

It depends what for....If I was going to print these large size I would want something longer.... If just for web, 400 is fine......

okay well that gives me a good view on things then, i think i may investigate some longer options some of the 500mm end of things maybe just for that extra reach.

cheers

NP, good luck, enjoy the cricket :)
