I need to get myself a flash for my 40D but don't know what to get. Is there really a big difference between say a 380 and 430? I've been offered a Canon 380ex but don't know if it will work on a 40D, and ideas?
 
The EX range should all work fine. As to wether the 380 would do for you over the 430 or even the 580, it depends on your needs The more powerful models will give you greater control of exposure, especially if you want to bounce or use a diffuser.
 
Certainly, the 430 and 580 are more powerful, so it seems to me that the main question is just that - how much power is enough, and at what price ?
I have a 380ex, and it has served me fine, but I bought a 430 just recently (I needed a flash in a hurry, and my 380 was in Spain..) and have not yet noticed any real advantage, though there have been times when the 380 being bounced of a high ceiling has run out of power...
