Hi
Thinking of buying a flash.
1. Now the problem is that i have a D5100 and as i want to use it as an external flash, the D5100 doesn't have CLS commander (if im right).
I'm not familiar with flash guns that's why i wanted to know what are the ways that i could connect a flash like sb600 to the camera....

2.My budget is around £100, i was thinking of buying a Nikon SB600. Are there any other flash guns that you recommend or in the same rate as the SB600?

Yongnuo Yn-560 II.

Because D5100 doesn't have CLS, you are restricted to manually configure the flashgun. So as long as the flash can be triggered optically by another flash, it's good for the job.

Then why spend the extra for features you don't use? Yn650 is THE manual flashgun, it's cheap and it just works.

^^^ This.

You should be able to get 2 x YN560 II for £100.

Then there's the YN560 III out as well.

A quick google will give you prices and features etc.

The only issue with the YN560's is that they are manual flashes. No problem if all you want to do is trigger them off camera. But if it's your first flash then personally I'd suggest something like the YN565 instead which will be TTL as well meaning you can connect it to the hotshoe of your camera and use it as well...a flash!

Thanks guys, really helpful replys :)
One more question, now how would i be able to connect the flash to the camera?
Will i need to buy a receiver?
Sorry for the stupid questions :bonk:

No question is stupid question, we all learn from asking questions :)

You set flash power of your pop-up flash to minimal either by flash exposure compensation (FEC) or by putting it into manual mode and set it to 1/64.

You then set the flashgun to be optical slave. Digital optical slave if you are using FEC or normal optical slave if you are setting pop-up flash power manually.

What optical slave does is the flashgun will fire when it sees another flash. Digital mode ignores pre-flash used by pop-up to determine exposure, while normal/film mode just fires when it detects another flash.

Answer to your question, line of sight from your camera pop-up flash to your flashgun, otherwise nothing else is needed.

Thanks Wuyan

Is there a website that could compare flash guns?
Im quite stuck with three different ones...
Yongnuo YN-560EX
Yongnuo YN-560 II
Yongnuo YN-560 III

I've searched online but cant find the difference between the two YN-560.

Or you can get a set of triggers, yongnuo rf-603 and they can be used to fire it, also you get a cable that plugs into your camera and allows a wireless shutter release,(just check which cable is included for you model of camera, if using ebay it will tell you if it fits) also if you pair them with the yongnuo 560 III it has an inbuilt rf-603 in the flash gun, you can then place the flash where you want, attach a trigger to hotshoe of camera and plug in the lead, then use the other trigger to fire everything off.

Go for the latest III! It's the only one with buildt-in receiver.

And do get a pair of RF-603! :D

Here's a link to the official yongnuo web-shop, RF-603 for D5100: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RF-603-Flas...762?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a13c9b59a

And the 560-III: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yongnuo-YN-...pt=Digital_Camera_Flashes&hash=item2a2ba28c3c

$36 + $86 = $122 = £79 = a bargain!
