Which Flash Should i get for my Canon 40D?

Canon Flash or Sigma?

Go with either the 580 or 430 Canon units.... I went with the Sigma to save money and regret it. It's prone to having hissy fits when in ETTL mode.

I'm just about to order a 580 which will provide the best options with the 40D (although the new 430 Mk II is meant to be very good also)

Steve

I have though about the Canon 580 as I like to have a Master flash just incase i get another flash later to trigger wirless and i believe need to get the 580 to do this. Which of the sigma is the master?

I don't think the Sigma does wireless, there's nothing about it in the handbook

Just wish it was cheaper.... The 430 is in a good price range

I've just ordered the 430 for my 40D. It'll do the job fine unless you really need the extra oomph of the 580.

Which it often is... Think about a used 420EX or 550EX first and then, later on, get a 580EX. You can use either the 420EX or 550EX as slaves for the 580EX.

As a matter of fact, I do pretty darn well with a 550EX and a 420EX slave.

I am not saying that the 430EX and 580EX flashes are not better than the older 420EX and 550EX; just that these older flash units are a viable option at a relatively low price.

well on my 500dg super, i used to use a 430 on the camera, and the super else where in the room

You sure I would of though the Super would have to be on the camera to trigger the super??? How did you do it as I can test this out today... Women Father coming with a Super and a canon 430 and we aint a clue how to do it. Please help

in slave mode , seems any trigger will set it off

Put which in slave mode?

And when i take a picture the 430 will set the super off wireless? This what i am trying to do as i know you can get them to set off wireless when trigger the camera..

the 430 is the trigger, same as you use the on broad flash, same with sigma,
set to slave manual zoom,

And this certain gentleman is Kerso I bet ;)

So on the onboard Flash should be set as slave but what about the other flash that is away from the cam?

580 EX II - I got mine for less than £200 after cash back (ended) and VAT had been deducted.

Whichever one you buy, stick one of these on it.

on broad one is the master ,all others would be set as slave

So would this not work if i had 2 430II????

yeah if had one set as master and the others set as slave, and on same channel,
thou you have to read the instrutions if the 430II

Then why I been told to get a 580 and a 430 to do the job properly. Is it cos I can get them to tell each other what flash setting and power i want them to do???? And if I had 2 430 it wont have much option?

dunno,why you been told that,
i never had two canon flashes, just the 430 and the 500 dg super

So can you get your 430 to tell the 500DG what power to use?

dont think so,the 430 just trigger the other flash off, both would be set maually i guess

Ok thank you for clearing this up for me mate

I didn't think the 430 could be used as a master ??

And are you sure that the Sigma wireless system is compatible with that on the Canon ?

Steve

well using the Sigma 500dg super in optical slave mode, most things will trigger it,
camera's flash-
430ex-
interfit studio trigger

430 EX

OR

430 EX II

What is the big different between them?

Ah, difference is, if you use a 580 as master, and a 430 as slave, you can keep ETTL (I think...)

i have no idea on the 580,
just the 430 and the sigma 500dg super

My point is/was, that using the Sigma, you have to use the 430 in manual. I have the (non-super) 500, and an old Vivitar. I use these, along with a pair optical slaves, triggered by the on board flash, in manual mode. Either that, or I use the Sigma on the hot shoe (in ETTL mode) and use the Vivitar on the slave (in manual).

I think your set up is rather similar....
