What filter

Have a look at the inside of your lenscap and it will tell you what size your filter thread is.

Cokin P series filters are a reasonably priced good place to start with creative filters and there are plenty to be found on ebay.

You need a filter holder and an adapter disc to attach it to your lens and then some filters to go in the holder. Neutral Density, Graduated Neutral Density and Circular Polarising filters are useful first purchases.

I've always been one to have seperate filters for each lens. All my filters are of the Hoya Pro 1 DMC range; UV(0) and CPL filters.

That's a UV filter, not ND. You can get ND filters that screw into the lens thread and, for non-graduated filters, I'd personally prefer that. Have a look here.
