What cheap (or even better, free) editing software do you use or would reccomend to a newbie like myself?
Also what is the best way to put a watermark on photos?

Probably GIMP
I don't use editing software, except for Nero Photosnap (very basic) but i've heard good things about GIMP

Cheap and cheerful, then Picasa for simple editing, and FastStone for watermarking /resizing etc etc I think both have a free version too.

I can recommend picasa, but I found GIMP a bit of a faff. Currently use elements 7 which cost £6 for the disk of e-bay.

Picasa for the quick, simple stuff and GIMP for everything else. Both free.

I found Paint.net very good, it is free and I preferred it to Gimp. There do seem to be more tutorials etc on the web for gimp though. You could do what I did, download both and see what you prefer. Once you want to move on to photoshop it will not be quite such a learning shock if you have used one of those.

I use the software that came with the camera to do the conversion from RAW and then Photoscape (if I just want to do a few simple things) or GIMP (if I need a lot of work)

Paint Shop Pro - capable of almost everything Photoshop will do, but easier. Cheap enough too. Can work from RAW but not recommended, use your camera's raw converter.

I have PS CS5 & now trying out LR4,i absolutely love LR4 & i don,t think it is that expensive for such a great editing software.
I don,t really use PS much now.:)
