Yes
I set up a portfolio website in January as a new method to showcase my better images and also as a blog too. At the moment its a zenfolio site so I'm thinking upgrading the membership for the extra storage but also the possibility to have my own domain name too. I don't sell images and strictly a hobby but I like updating the website and I find its nice to be able to direct people there rather than my Flickr account.

What I'm thinking is I would like my name and either .co.uk or .com as a domain name. I'm not sure which would be best as there are already three websites that use my name either in full or shortened with .co.uk, .com and .info. These are websites for a web developer, a house representative in the US and a photographer.

I really want it to be different as these addresses are probably too close, especially the photographer. I'm now thinking of using something like using my name and photo.co.uk or .com rather than using my name, would this be different enough? I also don't want it to be too long but different enough so it does not get mixed up with existing websites.

Does anyone else have any ideas on naming a domain?

I'm not sure where it was best to post this so I added it to basics, please move this to a better location if there is one. Thanks.

What about your initials and then photography.co.uk?

What a coincidence - my cousin Fiona Ulrich had the same issue.

Initials, initial and surname, location and name would all work I imagine.

Nah! If you're going to buy a domain name, get something that someone might want to buy off you at some stage. If someone stumbles into your family pictures, they're probably going to get bored very quickly and leave.

I usually set up specific pages for specific occasions and sent the link to just that page, things stay relatively private that way, especially of you don't name the images.

My motivation for putting stuff on a web page and sending a link is just to limit the impact on the e-mailbox of friends. I just that its bad form to dump megs of images on someone if they aren't expecting and, have explicitly said, they want.

I think when the obvious choices are no good, it's time to play on words......

I wanted a site and contact email, which I could give out to people.
I think seeming a little bit more professional and having a business card + website could probably defuse those "omg you must be a weirdo/p***" situations we hear so much about........ I was quite fortunate to get the lyonspride domain name for a bargain £3 a year :D

Just try and make a two syllable word up, it worked just fine for Kodak. When you think about it lots of companies are know by short 2 syllable words

Apple
Orange
Virgin
Google
Flickr
Tesco
Asda
Amstrad
And the forums own kipax
