What does this scribble relate to?

Yes
Just been out the front of the house and noticed a bit of scribble/ writing, on the side of the door panel. It looks like a letter C with a line running through it, top to bottom and the letter X. There is some scribble, and I can't make out what it says.

It's not a burglar house code is it, look them up on an image search.

Almost certainly surveyor's marks - anything from the council to gas / electric.

The whole burglar's code thing has largely been dismissed as a myth.

Is it new or have you just noticed it? Back in my boatbuilding days, we used the C with a line to indicate 'centre' - if followed by a dimension it was the distance between centres when laying out a boat.

Do you have a smallish dog?

There was a spate in this area of scum marking houses that had small dogs, to steal for dog fighting training.
That must be a year or so back .. I suppose "they" must have moved on to other area's by now ...

This was happening in Swansea too

Unless said scum marked in large letters with a black marker, they would have to approach each door close to in order to see the marks. Not a very subtle technique. Sounds more like urban myth.

Lets face it people that are prepared to do this sort of thing would have no problem getting close ...
Delivering leaflets / has half a tonne of tarmac left can do your drive at good price ..
Of course by knocking on the door they would soon discover if the place was empty, and not all houses have a large frontage.
Many these days, the door opens straight on to the public foot path within a foot step.

Of course the marks may be totally innocent. But I was just giving the OP a heads up,
as the dogs were either "snatched" from the front garden, or the person walking them had the leads snatched or cut from their hands..

Not when it happens locally with substantiated reports...

It has only appeared within the last day or two, it is about chin height to me, and I am about 5ft 8 or so. I thought maybe one of the neighbours was playing silly gits, but I get on with all the neigbours.

We did have a lovely gentle staffie cross, she passed away a little while back. So no, no other dog. :(

Oddly I saw a van the other day with that scrawled in the dirty doors :D
But was it a tool driving it..............................???

Have you a photo of it, Jon?

Yes but I did not post it in this section, as it may annoy some, who don't like photos being posted in non photo forums.

Eh?

If there are such people, let them be annoyed. Posting a picture is the obvious thing to do.

Looks like someone has had dirty hands on the wood panel. The white is the wood surround of the front door.

Tried wiping the door frame, still visible.

So what does it mean. Someone said it could be gas. I wonder if it could relate to the gas meter maybe?

Could say, 880mm door 684mm side frame.

Mean anything?

No idea, I thought it may have been an Amazon delivery maybe, leaving instructions on a package maybe. I have opened the door, while some were attempting to leave a package in bin shed, only thing I can think. But someone earlier said the C with a line through it, meant gas.

When I first saw it, I thought it was an abusive message.

That’s how I read it too. It definitely looks like measurements rather than anything suspicious. Maybe a workman has just made a mistake, you could be in for a free door. :)

Are you having any work done or had any work done recently Or any large deliveries due? They could be marks left by workmen or could be part of the Da Pinchi code?
Might be worth at least telling the police or council about it, they may have had similar reports in the area.

That’s what they do here, carrying large holdalls and claiming to be selling stuff. I’ve found one in the back garden (stepped over 4 foot fence) and on another occasion peering through curtains having got no answer at the door. Often when they are working the road there’s another sitting on a bench nearby doing nothing but I presume to be a lookout :(.

Mystery Solved...

A load of workers in hi vis vests have turned up along our street. They are taking measurements on windows and doors. @boogie man looks like it. We must have been out when they wanted to size things up. It would have been nice if they had left a note. They must have started at the top first obviously, looks like things are happening up there. Looks like they are replacing windows.

We don't speak to the neighbours at the top end, so no way of knowing. I have just been out to speak to the workmen now.

I must admit, I thought it might be the gas meter reading, as the meter box is close by.

Thanks for the replies, yes even the alarming ones. I was worried someone might try and steal a dog that we don't have, or rob the family jewels that we also don't have. :D

That seems to have gone by the wayside at the moment in favour of the "Bog Roll" (y)

I see you did post an image good, its relevant to the topic (y)
As and aside the most reported out of place images are the ones posted in the talk section, where there is an image sharing section.

There's an amusing follow up to that - the complainant has a slight problem with their eyesight which means they see different colours through each eye and aren't sure which is more correct but can't post examples for us to see!

A likely cover story - if they were quarantining you all, they would say that wouldn't they? :exit:

More likely looking after us, as we are mainly older and disabled folk who live in the houses locally. :)
