What does "IQ" mean?

Hi,

The term "IQ" is used regulary on this forum when describing a lens, what does it actually refer to and what does it mean in the real world when taking a picture?

in real world, very little, unless you particularly enjoy photos of test charts and brick walls...
 
There are many things that could be summarised as IQ or lack of it. This could be distortion, chromatic abberation (where you get coloured fringing at the edges of objects), sharpness or lack of it, amongst others.
