Tim, you've confused me slightly - which isn't hard- give us a quick walk through of objective- I am unsure if one follows through on the other- before and after and which way around or if they are independent bits of PP- one image with two outcomes? Screen I am viewing on may not be helping so could be missing obvious.
 
Sorry, My mistake. Its been a long day. The top is an edited version of the bottom. Was just playing around with age and effects! Just wanted an opinion on whether this is worth progressing or am I fighting a losing battle?

I think there is some mileage to be had. Maybe a b&w would be easier to begin with. I think the lines are looking good but maybe a bit much on the burn tool?

A look at link below and elsewhere shows faces do get grittier- I guess it's a fine line between that and looking like a mechanic for want of a better comparison but you know what I mean- quite hard to get that balance between an old look and just an unwashed faced. Don't think you are far away though.
