Seen this on another forum, a rant by a member, was just wondering what you all think of this.

From another forum:There's something else that bothers me too. People, and I'm speaking in very broad terms here, seem to assume that D40 owners are "wanna be" photographers, or that they only want something better than a P&S. I don't think this is the case at all. Sure, these lower end DSLR's do help to appeal to the lower end of the market, but the simple fact of owning a lower end DSLR doesn't make one any less of a skilled photographer. I've routinely sold prints for a few hundred dollars made with my "lowly" D40x and the kit lens. I think we need to dispel the notion that just because a D40/x/60 doesn't have the bulk, build quality or the few additional features that the D300 offers that it's somehow not worthy of being used for "real" photography.

Is there a saying like: Its not how good the camera is but how good the person behind it is?

:thinking:I am a D40 owner and not a wannabe photographer - I am a photographer - ie; someone who takes photo's! I have no desire to do it professionally and the photo's I take are for me and friends who might enjoy them. I went on a course for me with my lowly d40 and loved it and have fun with my camera!
Anyway, maybe - this is the wrong place for fun lovers, but isn't photography a passion that has earned people money!!!
as for the saying - I am getting a better person behind it and am loving tryin to get better as a picture taker and image sharere. Actually, that is what photography is all about sharing images that remind us of life in our part of the world!!!
passion and images = photography!!!:woot:

I would say that people who go out of their way to dismiss the work of people on the basis of them having less expensive kit are pretty much not worth listening to anyway.

It's useful to learn off people with better kit, as invariably (okay, not invariably, but you know what I mean), the fact that they've invested a lot more means that they probably know a lot more (unless they're the 'all the gear but no idea' types), but to me, it's more about your passion for capturing the moment and doing something you're enjoying, rather than just having super expensive kit and expecting it to take the picture for you.

was this on POTN by any chance?

If taking pictures with a entry-level DSLR or any camera isn't "real" photography then I don't know what is :cuckoo: Maybe some folk are just bitter that they have all the gear but can't take shots like the guy next to him with a D40.

The equipment is only as good as the person using it in my opinion.

Any decent photographer would be able to produce good shots from a varying range of cameras from entry to professional
