I'm thinking of buying a secondhand Nikon 12-24mm f4 and wanted your thoughts. There's plenty of other lenses available from Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, should I be considering these? or maybe the newer Nikon 10-24mm?

I like mine (12-24 Nikkor), never disappointed with the image quality, nice colour rendition and pretty sharp, never looked at the 10-24.

I like the 12-24- good solid feel to it and images produced are pretty good. I think it outperforms the 10-24 which is vastly overpriced- its priced on par with the Canon but its performance certainly isn't.
For Nikon I found the Tokina 11-16 the best UWA although there's not a lot in it compared to the 12-24 and there's always PS anyway. The Tokina is more flexible- lack of range I always thought was a mute point seeing as most UWA's are nearly always used at their widest and that's where a lens collection comes in though I appreciate it could be handy.
Sigma can be good but depends how much time you have on your hands to get one that works- I know someone who has just returned theirs due to it being soft.
Tamron build an excellent 17-50 but I wouldn't go wider and I don't think that's being unkind- credit where credit is due...;)

14 - 24 is where the party's at!

Indeed, for FX if you want perfection it can't be beaten.

However, on a D7000 if you really want to go wide there are more appropriate options.

Thanks Dr_O, I re-read your reply and looked into the Tokina, its got some incredible positive feedback and I do love WA so I've decided to buy a new 11-16mm Tokina. Great price, can actually pick one up new for the price of a second hand Nikon 12-24 :) Just cant wait to get my paws on this lens, such good reviews.

Thanks to everyone again :)

bought the 12-24 Nikkor after doing a lot of research and it has paid off. Brilliant lens.
