Might sound like a daft question but what do you all do with your pictures? Im not a pro togger more of a hobbiest and just randomly take photos at family events etc... but the majority if not all end up being saved on my computer for years.

I got tons of space on my computer so thats not the problem, the problem im having at the moment is everytime we have family come over and decide to go through our old photo albums the one question that comes up is is "where are all the new pics?" I think printing upto 1000+ pictures from home is way to costly so what are the options?

I dont like digital picture frames... and streaming to xbox or ps3 isnt always the best way to show pictures.

i am in exactly the same postion...i have everything saved on the computer...

might throw everying on a dvd when i can be bothered!

Make yourself some video disk slideshows and show them, I use proshow gold and write them to dvd after choosing the best selection from our family outings. You can also print the odd book if it is a special occasion to show people.

The thing is im bit of a perfectionist and the last photo slide show I made took me 4 days because I was never happy with the smallest of things lol... I dont think you can beat a good old fashion photo album its just something about everyone sitting around one album looking a bit pictures together.

Might see if I can find a good online printer and just stick everything in albums.

Obviously I will never get rid of my digi copies on the computer but when guest and family are round they always ask to see photos especially now they know I do photography albeit as a hobby... they assume im a pro

if you have the option of a laptop, and a tv with s-video (laptop too),

i network the large files to laptop day before, then plug in laptop to tv, via s-video and watch as a slideshow on big screen.

Ok I guess my next question is how to print professional standard photographs... Do you get them done from external company or do most of you print from home? I have a fairly decent epson printer which does a4 borderless but thats about it not really good for mass photographs...

I print some from home on epson R2880 which prints to an excellent standard.
However I'm now getting some done online as it works out cheaper and because I cant keep up with the demand.
DScolourlabs seem to be very good, I've just ordered 76 A3/A4 prints from them.
Photobox I have found to be a bit hit and miss qualitywise so I wont be using them again.

One thing though, get yourself an external hard drive and back-up your images.
If you dont and your pc dies on you then you will regret it ;)

Its cheaper to use an external printer than printing at home as inks are expensive, and if you do them in bulk you can get bigger discounts.

There are often deals to be done on photobooks so you can compile a book of family or holiday shots and print to a book.

Why not look at something like Blurb to produce photobooks rather than printing all the individual photos and then mounting them in albums.

Got 5x 1tb F1 Samsung Spinpoint none of them with OS on them so should be good, I hate external hdd :gag:

Thanks for that blurb looks good, do they print and post the final product or does it stay online?

Delete them by accident... to do this, all you have to do is put them on a hard-drive and knock it onto the floor while it's working - that little arm in there just scribes right across the disk rendering it useless...lol...

Photobox- print over 500 and they are 5p a print. I guess its still £50 for 1000- but thats pretty cheap if you compare the cost to film processing/printing.

The majority of mine are on an assortment of HDDs both internal and external. They're also backed up onto optical disks. The better ones get printed by whoever's doing the best deal at the time - I save up what I want printed until I have 200 or so to be done at enprint size. Any that are worth it then get printed up to A4 at home and the very best may get done at A3, again at home.

Get over to vistaprint and turn them into calendars ... they make ideal family gifts and Christmas is coming

I hate vistaprint with passion had terrible service from them around a year ago. Unless they have ironed out their problems and stopped signing me up to subscription service without my knowledge I wont be using them again. :bonk:

I have a Lacie Disk Mini Home Edition which saves me tons of work. I do some photos fo family and friends but you always get others that say they would like a copy of this or that.

I use the Lacie as a NAS server, all the stuff I'm willing to share is on it and you can allow anyone access through e-mail. You can restrict access to one folder or a whole section and stopping access is just as easy. So if anyone asks I just get the e-mail address send the a link and tell them to download it burn to media then get them printed themselves.

You can also access it from anywhere in the world and upload stuff to it or stream slideshows to where you are but it's restricted to WMP format unless you download the entire file first.

On top of that I use it as a music server for the family network, wouldn't be without it now.

All my photos are backed-up onto Seagate HDD ..... I produce a calendar for family and selected friends... I use Simply Calendars software...1st class templates...Home printed on Canon printer, bound using a binder bought from Llidl a few years ago....Give it a go you will enjoy it!..... There is a calendar software prog. that allows you to print calendars that fit into a CD case. I havn't used this personally but have seen one used for a village project in Yorkshire, and have to say I was well impressed!

I've got most of mine on my HDD and backed up to dvd's. The ones that I do print out I either frame or put into themed A4 pocket folders. I do of course subject friends and family to endless slideshows whenever they visit. :D

This is a great question to ask! I've been thinking of asking something similar for a while and I'm interested to see what other people are doing with their photos.

After a shoot, I'll (eventually) go through the photos, pick out the keepers and run them through post-processing. I use metadata in Bridge to label the best ones and also give them information about who's in the shots, where it was, the occasion, etc. After that, it's a bit of a black hole, really.

If I have some shots I'm especially proud of, I'll outsource printing to a lab and give the prints to the people in the shots. It's quite rewarding next time you go round your friends house and see your photos hanging on the wall :)

I also use some of them for birthdays, etc. For example, it was recently my sister's 30th so I went through all the photos I have of her son (now 17 months old) from the first (taken at the hospital when he was 1 hour old) to the most recent (a couple of weeks before my sister's birthday), got them printed and put them in an album for her. She couldn't have been more chuffed with them and has asked for larger prints of a few to hang around the house (she'll pay for the printing, thankfully!).

I'm still trying to find a way to hang a lot of photos in my own room though. I'd like a way to get prints done at 8x6 or so and hang a lot on a wall unframed. I'm thinking something along the lines of a corkboard but trying to find a nice looking one is a bit of a mission.

It's all well and good taking all these photos but, as you've mentioned already, you need to show them off!

George.

me too...i am in the process of editing 14Gb of stuff...i think thats the answer...cruelly edit
when i do a holiday i print out around 48 shots...6 pages in the album...any more is not really fair on your guests
the rest if they are worth keeping end up on my caddy which i use for online forums etc
cant throw them all out though...but wont print any more

Do you have a games console?

My wife's brother-in-law, as their camera takes to SD, plugs the card directly into the Wii, which then shows the pictures as a slide-show on the telly. I find it a little slow, but it does a good job of showing the pics.

It varies.

Some family ones are printed out and my daughter/wife scrapbooks them (as she's doing for the last holiday), or we get them printed into a photobook, much easy than lots of loose photo's.

For general sharing of stuff then those photo's go onto my Pbase account - I have around 10K pics on there.

At home I have three copies of everything on various media.

I think photobooks are the options I am considering, I do have a online site where I post photos but a lot of the older family members prefer to sit down with an album in their hands instead of a laptop

From a professional point of view, 60-70 per cent of my work ends up being used in magazines; after all, that's my job. It all gets stored on a HD but it is used and seen.

My personal stuff is less likely to see the light of day. Most sits on my HD, little gets printed and some goes on my website.

then you dont get fingermarks all over the screen

the good old family album..

Photobooks are a really good way to store items/moments. Quite nice having them on the bookshelf to pull out. I'm going to have to sit down and do our holiday at somepoint.

Next question then is where is the best place to get photobooks done from?

I stream mine from the PC onto the TV in the lounge via the PS3, great for when family and friends come around.

If you have a PS3, Xbox, Wii, i'd recommend tversity for streaming, works great and it's free.

I've got mine on HD, also backup HD too.

Thinking about it, not got any printed out.

These photoalbum sites are a good idea. Did a book for my gran's 80th, scanned a load of old photos in.

She was pleased, in particular there was a photo of her Mum and Dad, the original was only about the size of a card. So to see it at a reasonable size was nice.

I am sure Tesco is only £0.03 per 6x4 print, so £30 for 1000 photos isnt to bad, and surely there is a cheaper bulk option some where.
