I'm thinking of converting the front room in to a studio, to do portraits etc.

What lighting heads would you recommend, and how many would I need, within a budget of about £500-750?

Take this advice with a pinch of salt as I am on a steep learning curve but some great portrait shots can be obtained with just the one main light (and maybe a reflector) and this main light could be a speedlight (with a brolly).
You will also need to think about the background (and stands maybe) and a flash meter. Depending on the type of background and how far away your subject can get (and the effect you are going for) you may also need to light the background too - treat this as another subject but further from the lens and so requiring more powerful lighting.
Depending on the type of portraits some props may also be useful.

Might be worth going on a beginners studio lighting course to get a feel for it before you drop that sort of cash on some new gear

There is a full studio kit for sale in the classified section at the moment which is within your budget.
