Hi I'm completely new to dslr, I've just bought a canon eos 400d which came with the standard 18-55 lens. Whilst it takes exceptionally great photos (well, to my standard anyway!) I've struggled in places like our local safari park, city park getting close ups of wildlife who a little far away. The lens I have takes great portrait pics.

Can anyone suggest either a good upgrade or an additional lens which I would find useful. As I say I'm completely new and I'm only starting to understand things, I've not really taken the camera of auto yet!!

Thanks in advance for your patience!

you can't access because you need to have been a member for 30days and made over 100 posts

don't go spamming your way to that magic 100 post - too many 1 line posts will mean that even at 100 you might struggle to get in

Ahhhh ok I'd been all over the settings and couldn't find anything. No worries I don't want to be a total pain in the backside on here lol! Thanks for your advice motogp I'll have a look round for that lens you suggested.

55-250 would be the next one to add, a great lens for the money, keep an eye on the for sale section of this site they pop up now and then.

:plusone:

Great sharp lens with Image Stabilizer, can't go wrong! It's about £165 new which is still very cheap.

Second the choice of a 55/250 but please take the camera out of auto, you will do far better when you start to use it rather than it thinking for you.
Try and pick up a book called 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson its a great read and very valuable

Cheers

Chris

another shout for the 250 for this sort of work , ideal without breaking the bank!!

Canon lens stocks are very low at the moment, although checking WEX the 55-250 is one lens that they actually have in stock! They're charging £215.
