Been thinking of getting some kind of tripod on my wheelchair, I have one of these....

(quantum 6000 powerchair, but the option without the tilting and height ajustment etc) cause I'm struggling alot at the moment - I've been :$ well worse than usual fsince March and really hope that there's a solution to make things easier for me to carry on togging as much as I want to. (I suppose anyone whose seen my 365 has noticed the lack of posts...) So with the shutter release cable that I have as well, I'm thinking it should make it easier.

Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. :thumbs:

Not sure where anything would fit, but there's a couple of places that might work, one is really thin (about 1cm wide) steel bar thingy at the sides (one loop in each corner) and the other is under the arm rest, where the arm rest attaches, there's a sort of handle type foamy thing, about 1" wide. The picture doesn't show these though :(
 
Hi Nattelie.
I work in a disability outlet as the (Technical manager) and we are a dealer for that chair, would a monopod be a better idea? as there may be more options to mounting it.

thats the best idea i have seen yet...a monopod in a flagpole holder would do as well...with a decent ball and socket head..

i thought the monopod could be the flagpole as it were ...a vertical strut and fixed into the chair between your legs on the front of the seat...bracket required...then on it a good platform for the camera
ball and socked dont need pan and tilt levers and allow fast setting for angles
the hard part may be fixing the shaft of the monopod to the seat...thinks...

something along the lines of a scaffolding flag pole clip

would need some 'fitting' to suit the mount area and the monopod diameter

it would then be in front of you and tilted towards or away from you depending on whether you sit forward or lean back in the chair

may not be brilliant but can be achieved
 
ahhh ok. Now I understand.
Unfortunately that wouldn't be possible, - the seat is sort of like a car seat and only a thin metal shelf underneath that it sits on and completely covers. There's a gap then under that is the big box that holds the electrics and the batteries and the footplate comes out of. I have (at the moment cause I can't wear shoes again :cry: I ♥ shoes!) a cushion fixed onto the footplate so that my wonky feet don't hurt as much and the cushion takes some of the impact of going over surfaces etc, - even though the wheelchair has shocks, cause my stupid nerves are hypersensitive, I need something else to alleviate the vibrations a little. :thumbs: So I don't have anywhere that I could attach a flagpole holder thingy. :( But thank you for your suggestion though, it really is appriciated!

At the moment the manfrotto arm and clamp look like my best bet. It's more affordable than the white one (and it's black so won't stand out like a sore thumb :lol:)

like mine when i was an apprentice and hit it with a hammer
the chargehand made me go up on deck...we were doing a tanker engine overhaul...and drill a hole in my nail to let the blood out and ease the pressure

i got sick
 
I have a gorilla pod, the medium one I think? I don't trust it enough, it sort of collapses a little sometimes and if it's on the arm, I'm still not going to get close enough to the view finder for night shots, macro shots etc. Hubby suggeted the same thing a while ago TBH

Yeah, with Wheels' kit as a guinea-pig project so to speak, we should be a leading authority on wheelchair 'mods for togs'...

Make sure we patent it as a registered TP design...we'll be rich!!!
 
hehe patent a wicked design for wheelchairs and cameras and I'll be first in the line to buy one ;) :thumbs:

Honestly, any advice is appiciated on it. I mean, I need to sort something that's sturdy, can be removed and is best value for money but fairly cheap, you know what I mean?

The arm thingy above posted by FITP is the best thing that I've seen so far, not OTT expensive, I can see how it would work and it looks like it should be sturdy enough to do the job. I know that I'll not be able to put it on and take it off by myself, but that shoudn't be a problem - means that I only pester hubby twice :lol:
 
I will be posting a step by step project about wheels' wheel chair on TP as I build the alterations. When I do I will supply all the contacts and prices so it can be re-created. The setup we are building for Wheels will work with ANY camera that has LIVEVIEW and a HDMI port. There are ways of making older and cheaper cameras work using older and cheaper monitors and I will speak about that too.

My camera doesn't do live view on my laptop or anything (either that or I'm doing it wrong... which wouldn't surprise me,) supposedly you can't do it with anything "lower" than the 700 with the sony models? :shrug: That's not a problem though, with a pod on my chair I should be able to manage more.

My idea is going to be based on what I came up for for wheels.

Two brackets which will depend on the chair....
Joystick head attached to one bracket with camera on it.
HDMI lead running from camera to screen attached to other bracket
Flash either attached to the camera or better still on its own bracket and attached with lead or fired by CLS.......

The joystick 222 head is as cheap as £50

You sell the lead and flash mounting bracket

Basically you are looking at £350 plus main brackets and original equipment.

Oh and you could use the screen to watch Blu-ray or DVD films as you go about :)

The monitor is basically a computer screen, you could stick a cheap laptop under your seat and have internet too :)

Thanks. Why would I need a screen though? :thinking: (don't tempt me with blu-ray on the go, I'm dangerous enough as it is! :lol:) TBH I just want something affordable that'd work as a tripod cause I need one more often now, used with a shutter release cable (oten using a shutter release cable with the camera around my neck ATM for even 1/80th, cause hands are too shaky) and it's difficult to use a tripod with a wheelchair.

It depends on what you are photographing. The camera is on a joystick head which you can rotate and tilt. If it is tilted at the ground then the back of the camera (and the screen) is pointing straight upwards so you can't see it.

If you can get by without the screen then all you need is the bracket shown earlier with it's clamp and then a manfrotto 222 joystick head or similar. I particularly like the joystick head as it allows complete movement of the camera with rotation and tilt plus you can point it straight down then once you let go of the trigger the camera is locked in that exact position. The lock is strong enough to hold my D700 + grip + SB800 + 24-70 so it is VERY strong....

Yes it would, the clamp attaches to the chair and then you have the bar and at the end of the bar is the joystick head. Once I get all the bits and pieces together the exact design might change a little bit.
 
I really hope you can get something sorted out Nattelie. You are a great lady, battling with lots of pain and disability and a valued member of TP.

I am hopeless with anything technical but I know there are others on here that are good at these things.
