Hello everyone.

I have just got back to photography after a long summer break :P

Anyway, I took these just before I put my camera away and the pictures have been bugging me, so I decided to ask as I am just a amature.

Here are the pictures:

MLRWR015.jpg

As you can see, only part of the photo is sharp and the rest is out of focus, (picture 1 = bumper sharp and boot out of focus, picture 2 = boot shapr and bonnet not)

Both pictures were taken with a sigma 70-300m lens on a canon 400D, TV mode and about 1/100 shutter.

Is there any way/setting I can use to get all of the car in focused?
Or is it out of focused because of the angle the car was taken?? I seem to get clearer shots in different angles

Any tips?? :)
Thanks

I would love to help but don't know how to - sorry!

Just wanted to say maybe try posting in the motorsport section, you might get more replies from people who like to take these kinds of pics.

Hmm, I don't know a lot about this kind of photography, but they are all sharp, and well exposed. There is nothing wrong with your panning technique.

The good thing about panning is that you can use quite a long exposure to ensure that the background is blurred, which means that you could use a smaller aperture for the shots, which increases the depth of field, especially with vehicles approaching you at an angle. This would ensure that more of the subject would be in focus. The cars passing perpendicular to you lens seem to be in sharp focus front to back.

Don't take this as correct as i'm unsure, and far from expert, but what about shooting at around f/8 so the DOF is narrower, that should get you a wider area of sharp focus (I'm hoping i've got that right - someone correct me if not) which should hopefully get you the all-over sharpness you're wanting?

Again, i'm no expert, so feel free to kick me in the head, repeatedly, if you try it and it doesn't work.

Edit - Doug beat me to it.

They look good to me, but agree that they may get a better response in the Motorsport section, I'm sure a friendly mod will move the thread if you ask.

I believe the problem is down to part of the car moving at a different speed to the rest.

Now you've all picked yourself back up off the floor I'll explain. Take the first shot. As you're panning, your panning at the same relative speed as the front of the car due to the perspective of the long focal length. If you look at the back of the car, it's not out of focus, it's motion blur...

Now I think you can lessen the effect by using a shorter focal length ( which means getting closer ) and by taking the shot when the car is more parallel and/or moving slower.

I used to have the same problem when I started out.Your Shutter speed is a bit slow.
Picture 1. Bring the shutter speed up to 1/400.After taking some sample shots you can bring it down if you want.

Picture 2. Try 1/200 or 1/250

Hope this Helps.Post a few samples when your happy with results...............

Ah Thanks for the advice everyone. The info given was very helpful :)

But how do I change the F number on TV mode? is it just adjusting the metering up and down (because it doesnt actually tell you what F number it's at) if so then do I adjust it to the left as thats normally up with other settings.

Sisteron: won't 1/400 be abit fast? I know this might be a stupid question looking at your pro pics but I always been told/read that to get a good motion blur, you will need about 1/100.

The Tv mode will let you set the shutter speed and ISO then the camera will adjust the aperture to expose the shot. The only way to change the aperture in Tv mode (assuming you don't want to change the shutter speed) is to change the ISO

Ah I see. so if I shoot it at ISO 200 instead of 100 then the area of focus will increase??

Oh and I completely forgot there is a motorsport section, sorry about that :P

Why not go to Manual?

Yes. Increasing the ISO means you could have a smaller aperture hence greater DOF
