Lots of options, as you mention the Nikon and Sony already, you also have micro four thirds Olympus and Panasonic. You could pick up an epl-3 with 14-45mm kit lens from Olympus or the GF3 or even G3 from Panasonic.

The GX1 is excellent too, is very pocketable with a pancake lens, and the body can be picked up for some great prices new and used.

I think J1 and V1 with the 10-30mm lens are a bit of a bargain at the moment. The J1 still has £50 cash back but I think viewfinder on the V1 must be worth £50, particularly if you are used to a DSLR.

Will you be looking to add a selection of lenses to your kit in the future? If so Micro 4/3 is probably the best option as it's a very well fleshed out system now.

If you are looking to stick to a single lens or two then your options are quite a bit wider, but Sony would probably be the pick of the bunch in that situation.

The crucial thing is to go and handle them, some of them are very very small so depending on your hands this may be a critical factor. There are also some fairly odd/unconventional form factors, so coming from a DSLR it's definitely worth trying them out to feel what is comfortable.

If you want to maintain a DSLR feel and have a viewfinder the Panasonic G3 is a bargain at the moment, the good thing with that is that there are a couple of nice fairly cheap primes (Panasonic 14mm 2.5, OLympus 45mm 1.8) should you want to investigate those in the future.

Do you want a camera with a viewfinder or are you happy with a screen? This will narrow your choice a bit.

If you are going for a nikon 1 series you're better off with a sony rx100 which has the same size sensor and faster lens, and is genuinely pocket sized unlike the nikon.

Update: sorry just noticed your budget. I would rather any other csc over the nikon 1 series.
