HI

My daughter desparately wants to use my D700 and she loves using her grandads Canon compact so we are planning on getting one for chrimbo. We don't want one of those crummy toy digital ones.

Can anyone recommend a relatively robust compact for a 5-6 year olds small hands?

Doesn't have to come in pink either! :bonk:

might be worth looking see if any compacts have armour made for them.

My mate has a work compact that was water and shock profe you could throw it in a pint and it still worked, will see if i can get a model number :D

Thanks for the replies so far.....Not sure £200+ is what we are planning to spend...on me yes but not a young'un! More like £50-70 :)

Thats a tough but understandable budget,

The only camera i have seen at that price is the Genius G-Shot P831 in a computer mag, but its had some horrific reviews and is plasticky and cheap

Though a quick look at amazon and there's a few 60-80 pound cameras on that first page that might be worth a look

Keep and eye out for the batteries they use, many at that price range will eat AA batteries.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0902/09021705fujifilmz33.asp these are pretty reasonably priced (though maybe still a bit too much) and water/drop proof... range of colours too :)

other alternative is a £30 cheap rubbishy one from tescos or similar I guess, and when it gets broken / ignored, it's not a massive shame...

My kids play with my Monolta D image Z10 - second hand, £30 on ebay. 3.2mp, 8x zoom, aperture and shutter settings, bigger than average sensor, takes really good shots.

I recommend the Fuji S5000 series - though nothing above the S5600, as they went all rubbish build(gran has the 5700). My 7 yr old brother has the S5000, and its great. Its' really well built, stick on the lens hood afdapter and the glass is protected. He's dropped it loads and its absolutely fine. Also, its nice for kids to have a big zoom, my cousin has a mju 600 and wants a bigger zoom. Of course, he's had the S5000 for some 8 mths....he wants an upgrade with more pixels! ;)

Can I suggest argos.....i bought my son [8] a nikon [£100] and for about a tenner you can insure it for two years against any accident even if she drops it in the bath.

The argos solution sounds good, if not £200 is for a new one, I wonder if you might be able to get a second hand one of an older model in the price range? If you don't mind getting second hand in this instance of course?

I boughty my two (six and nine) a Vivitar 6mp compact each, 2.5 inch screen, 3x zoom, uses standard batteries - they took them to New Zealand last year and they are still going strong.
Thought about getting them one of those kiddies type cameras but they picture quality is usally rather bad (640x480), so i decided to get them a proper compact with a decent res instead, but without breaking the bank.

Get a good neck-strap for them, preferably one of those mobile phone ones, that way they wear it and its less likely to get left somewhere, dropped on the deck, etc.

You beat me to it......Best way to go I reckon:thumbs:

I'm in the same position. Am thinking about a Vivitar from Asda for £25 or one in Argos for £40 (Cant remember the make). Along with a neck strap seems like the best idea. If it doesnt bounce well not much lost!

Picked up a Panasonic FS4 from Tesco for £69 a couple of days ago for mother-in-law for Christmas - might be worth a look
