Mrs want a new Compact camera must be good pic quality even at low light maybe. £200 maybe bit more.

Looked at Nikon P310 and Sony wx100

what are your requirements?
You can get a Sony HX20 for ~£180 after cashback via Amazon but maybe it's specs (which would suit mine) don't fit your needs?

Apart from low light capabilities, what other functions / features does she want. Long zoom, HD video, full auto or manual capabilities, scene modes, panoramic features.

The Canon S100 seems to be one everyone recommends, 5x zoom (24-140mm), 12mp's, manual, raw, f2 lens, very good low light capabilities, but its an extra £100

Hi pano be nice zoom reasonable be good. The wx100 look good. She be in auto mode but I Prob play with other settings

Its not, its £208 from DigitalRev and Panamoz.

Only thing to note : I bought one last week from DigitalRev and it arrived within 3 days of ordering, but charged battery and immediately got the dreaded lens error. I sent it off to Canon who will repair it as it is a known issue, and it is currently on its way back to me from Germany.

Don't know anything about its performance yet because of that!!!

Fuji X10 from the Fuji refurb store, it's only a little more than your budget but you won't get much better really.

if you don't mind used, i've got a boxed, white olympus xz-1 possibly up for sell

f1.8 lens :)

I'd much rather get a used d40x for that price. compacts are compacts after all and can't defy the laws of physics

True but if the OPs Mrs is anything like mine she won't want to lug a dSLR about and would want something that fit in her pocket or handbag.

Get her a bigger handbag?

Plenty big enough now it all crap they keep in lol

I recently bought a P310 on recommendation from my local independent camera shop, after going in for an S100 which they didn't have. I got it on special for £198 and I am extremely pleased with it (so much so I bought another for the charity I work for).

You do sacrifice some zoom (only 4.2x) but you get a 1.8 lens which is bloody excellent and much more worth having (IMO).
The menu is fast, plenty of customisation, a programmable function button and full manual control (although it spends all its life in "P"). Startup is good and it holds its charge well.
My only small criticism is it does take a little time for the flash to charge. But then, with the 1.8 lens I haven't had much need to use it really...

I had an S8000 prior to this and hated it, so I was dubious about the P310 but I'm glad I took the shop's advice.

PS I find the low light quality is excellent for a compact.
