I have put a studio in one of my spare double bedrooms & would like some advice on background colurs.

What colours would you have > ?

I have 2 so far: White & a mottled Blue & White - both Muslin

but think I'm missing a black (almost sure) & maybe a grey >?

This is my 'playpen' not for pro use studio..

Personally i like black and grey at the moment. I do like white but i think its becoming a bit to over used - just my opinion of course

Hi Pete,

If you have enough lights then you can use your black (assuming you get one) as a grey - you just have to light it.... the benefit of this is that you can have a grey background without shadows if you light it at around the same power the light that reaches it from your subject lights.

Of course, if you want a grey background with nice creative shadows then you are going to have to get a grey one....

agree with black - really good.
have you had a look at the printed backgrounds (with wallpaper, graffiti etc) ? bit more expensive but maybe something to think about?

I think a grey is essential. You can do so much with it, from near white to near black and all points between.

Get a grey background a storm grey is great you get so much scope with it

I 've 'borrowed' a black & white colapsible background & like that a lot...
I'll also look into getting a grey - that colour had never occurred to me before - however Wife has got me on a buying photo kit ban this month after getting a 28-70 AF-S F2.8 & a 70-200mm F2.8 Vr2 lens this week...
It has been a good week though. lol

Thanks for the help

Glad you've said that. I just bought a 2.7x11m Calumet storm grey.

Unfortunately I substantially underestimated what 2.7m is, in real terms, and significantly overguestimated the length of my Mercedes A Class. The background is in the garage, and I think it's going to be there for quite some time. :(

I had the same problem, however i cut mine to 7ft wide, so they will fit in the car, which should be fine for most situations, unless of course you have a large group of people to fit in, but for 2 or 3 people standing/sitting down 7ft wide should be fine. If you decide to do this, the best way is to cut it before it's been fully unrolled, as it's tighter and easier to cut, you will need a very fine hacksaw blade though, i used an oscillating saw, it gives a slight rough edge, but this is no big deal, as no one sees the edge in the finished photo anyway, hope that helps :)
