Unusual that most people say that they work in sRGB. From what I've read sRGB is quite a small working space (smaller than Adobe RGB) and can clip the colour range.
Adobe RGB is a larger working space and is what I normally use, although after working the image I will make a copy and then convert the profile to sRGB for uploading to the web.
ProPhoto RGB is larger again and apparently the one to go for as it is huge and offers more versatility.
I'm not confident enough to use ProPhoto (yet). The article I read is this one...
Adobe RGB (1998) in 16 bit file as this give a good range of info so if i need to work on it there is plenty to work with and not end up getting gapes in the data.
It depends on where it's going. If it's going to a repro house that I know can handle it, I send as Adobe RGB. If in doubt sRGB. For hard copy printing on my own printer Adobe RGB.
Given its larger working space, i work in Adobe RGB. Then I finish my editing and save the 16bit TIFF for printing.
"The last part", it is only after editing (in Adobe RGB) that I then have the option to go to Image > Mode > Convert To Profile > and select sRGB if I then wish to upload that image to the web (after resizing of course). This is what I understand about choosing its destination.
