Hey all car experts :)

I'm thinking about getting a car.
As I am first time buyer, and that is going to be my first car in UK, I was told that I may end up in paying huuuuge insurance...
therefor Im looking for old car so the insurance should be much cheaper. maybe after one year or two I could go for a new ride as maybe I could get cheaper insurance :)
I know that insurance would go down just because I have secure parking at my new home and even at work it is secured.

What would be the best car for £2-3k ? not to expensive to run, insure etc :)

Any advise welcome:)

Lukas

OH I have forgot...
Any ideas what insurance might be on new fiat 500 ?
or something similar ?

As far as insurance is concerned - get a couple of quotes from online companies - to get an idea of what you'll pay before you actually buy something.

Don't forget though that different insurance companies can vary greatly, so go to a couple of places...

How old are you? What kind of car do you need? kids? ect...

Gona turn 30 this year.
No kids so 3door would do.
Was thinking about Polo/astra/focus/207 size maybe.
It has to be reliable :)

399 is not bad :)
A friend of mine bought his first car, focus 1.6 and his insurance is £1100!! but he is 25 or so...

If you get something like a 1.0 Nissan Micra or Vauxhall Corsa then that will keep the insurance about as low as it will go.

Whatever car you go for, keep the engine size down and don't get anything that suggests it is a "sports" model.

For comparison, I pay £360/year fully comprehensive but my car only has two seats and if you open the front bonnet there's no engine, nor is there one in the boot :p

If you're a big person with big feet, avoid cars like the 207.

Fiat 500 is a beautiful car (inside) but a lot more than £3000 to buy.

yes more than 3k but I could afford it on finance for 3 years :)

I had a look on insurance uotes...and I am scared!!!!

for silly honda jazz 1.3 engine around £1500 for a year!

unless I am doing something wrong ;D

Go for a popular cheap car with a small engine and is not that desirable. I personally rate the Nissan Micra as they are reliable and cheap to run. Had two in my time and will definitely be back to japanese cars when I am done with my Golf.

Insurancewise, don't go Comprehensive until you've been driving a few years and have a car that is worth some money. To start out, go for 'Third Party Only' or 'Third Party Fire & Theft' cover as these can sometimes be cheaper.

it seems that London is more expensive...just compared insurance for me for scenic 2002...for me in london is 2500 and for a friend of mine in Bolton 1000 !!
heh

Isn't an undesireable popular car a contradiction in terms? ;)

If it's a first car (ie you don't hae a no claims bonus) then the insurance is probably going to be eye-wateringly (most companies don't do third party or third party fire and theft any more) expensive, probably as much as, if not more than, the price of the car, so you'd be best to stick to something in group 1.

Realistically for a £2-3k budget the best you'll get is a 1.0 litre Corsa. Even down that part of the world you should be able to get something around a 2003-2004 1.0 Life privately or a 51 plate Club from a dealer.

If you want to go for something Japanese then you'll be looking at an old model Micra, but you'll pay a lot more for insurance for even a basic one of those over a Corsa.

Micra's will be stupidly cheap now as well as the current shape is on run out! Pretty sure theres some cheap finance out as well! It was just being announced before I took a couple of weeks off but can get more info if required lol.

does Nissan do Insurance ?

and what the heck is Pixo :)

Pixo is smaller and more basic than Micra and unless things have changed in the last 2 weeks availability is only on the N-tec which means the Micra will be cheaper :D

Nissan don't do insurance unfortunately.

I'll have a look today and see what offers are on

Sorry, let me rephrase that. A popular cheap car that is not that desirable to thieves or anyone who would consider it an excellent getaway car in the event of a high speed chase. Basically if it's flashy then insurance is likely to be more costly due the increased risk of break-ins/vehicle theft.

You need a low insurance group car, with a small engine, and to park it in a garage or on a drive.
Low mileage reduces premium
no courtesy car reduces premium
third party fire and theft may reduce premium, but some insurance companies think that if you don't want fully comp cover, you don't care about your own car, so increase the premium.

I would suggest an old shape Ford Ka. 1.3 engine, great fun to drive, looks good, and is insurance group one, so cheapest you'll probably find.

You will get a good one for your 3k. very economical too.
